Storyline

A self-possessed shepherd does not bow to a passing king, Laius of Thebes, so Laius draws his sword. The shepherd, Oedipus, slays the king and later, in a nightclub, hears the singing of Jocasta, Laius's widow and queen. Oedipus is smitten, and soon he's in her bed. Then, blind Tiresias, in the public square, announces that a prophecy has been fulfilled. Oedipus, always a man of action, gouges out his eyes, Jocasta hurls herself from a parapet, and Antigone, their daughter, begins her new role as guide to her blind father. The film is stop motion, with fruits and vegetables as the main character. Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

A Funny and Loving Parody of the Hollywood Epic
6 February 2004 | by See all my reviews

This short is lovely to look at and funny to listen to.

The vegetables enacting the familiar story of Oedipus in stop-motion are eloquent and expressive. Having Oedipus played by a potato makes perfect sense when you consider he has to put out his eyes.

The settings are derived from the Hollywood widescreen toga epics of the 1950s, and are quite grand.

The soundtrack is beautifully put together, as voices inspired by Charlton Heston, Orson Welles, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Alec Guinness read richly humorous dialogue.

I hope this one gets picked up for maximum distribution. It really deserves it. Kudos to director Jason Wishnow, and let's hope for a sequel.
