Al-Jazeera gets voice at confab

TORONTO -- Arab-language news service Al-Jazeera is set to take part in a first-ever public meeting of Arab and Israeli TV news and history producers at the 2004 World Congress of History Producers in Toronto, it was announced Monday. New York Times Television president William Abrams will moderate an Oct. 28 panel, History TV and the Middle East, which will include Al-Jazeera war correspondent Hassan Ibrahim, star of the U.S. documentary The Control Room, and Israeli documentary producer Liran Atzmor (The Era of the Generals). The debate will focus on current events in the Middle East, from the war in Iraq to the ideological struggle between fundamentalist Muslims and the secular West. »

'Knot' docu joins year's political films

NEW YORK -- With its Sundance Film Festival acquisition Super Size Me in current release, Eric d'Arbeloff and Howard Cohen's Roadside Attractions has snapped up another documentary, Jim De Seve's Tying the Knot, an exploration of the battle to legalize same-sex marriage. Knot -- produced through the 1,049 Films banner -- made its premiere at the recent Tribeca Film Festival. Roadside is planning an October rollout in time for the presidential election. Knot is just one of a handful of political docus -- among them Fahrenheit 9/11, Control Room and The Hunting of the President -- heating up theaters this year. »

Magnolia in 'Control' of docu rights

Indie banner Magnolia Pictures has picked up domestic rights to Jehane Noujaim's feature documentary Control Room, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film is a behind-the-scenes look at the Al Jazeera satellite network's coverage of the recent U.S. war on Iraq. Magnolia will release the film in May in New York, with a national rollout to follow. The deal was brokered by Magnolia topper Eamonn Bowles with Cinetic Media's Micah Green and Submarine's Josh Braun. This is the first acquisition Magnolia has made since Tom Quinn, former vp acquisitions at Samuel Goldwyn Films, came aboard. »
