Not the crème de la crème
9 July 2005 | by (Wellington, New Zealand) – See all my reviews

I know for a fact this country has better performers. I also know for a fact some of them were rejected for this show. Why? It makes better television to have a bunch of average people fight against one another, rather than have a favourite like Fantasia Burrows pop up early. Admittedly, the singers who got into the final three last time were very good, and must have had enough talent to become so polished, but you just can't help think that the tall poppy syndrome saw to the early demise of candidates who weren't shown at all. As a nation, we just don't seem comfortable picking world-beaters at the early stages, a flaw that this show exposes.
