Texas Joins The Union: Wake-Up Video

29 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The state of Texas has given the United States plenty to be excited for, including Dallas barbecue, the inspirations for "Friday Night Lights" and "Varsity Blues," Ugk, Lone Star beer and the old Houston Oilers. (For the time being, we'll ignore the states lesser exports, like the Bush family and an upsetting obsession with firearms.) But before Texans could give back to the United States, they had to join the Union first, which they did on this day in 1845.

The Republic of Texas declared their independence from Mexico in 1836 following a bloody conflict. General Sam Houston, who lead the Texans to victory at San Jacinto, was elected president of the newly independent republic, but the citizens also supported entrance into the United States. So why did nearly a decade elapse before the deal was made? Texas remained a slave state, and though slavery remained a fixture in the United States (the 13th Amendment, »

Gywneth and Leighton Ready to Make Beautiful Music Together

3 December 2009 1:15 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Gwyneth Paltrow is ready to remind hubby Chris Martin that she can carry a tune, too. The Oscar winner, who last gave her pipes a workout in 2000's Duets, will be harmonizing with Leighton Meester and Tim McGraw in the big-screen country musical Love Don't Let Me Down, per The Hollywood Reporter. Expect to hear the stars sing their own music in the story of a down-on-her-luck songbird (Paltrow) who tries a comeback with the help of her husband-manager (McGraw), a beauty queen turned singer (Meester) and a gifted songwriter (Friday Night Lights' Garrett Hedlund). That is, if the backstage drama doesn't tear them apart. Tobey Maguire is producing the flick, though he's not expected to have »

Paltrow, McGraw join country music drama

2 December 2009 8:04 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester are set to star in Screen Gems' country singing drama "Love Don't Let Me Down," which Shana Feste wrote and is directing.

Tobey Maguire and Jenno Topping are producing via their Maguire Entertainment banner.

In "Love," Hedlund plays a young rising singer-songwriter who becomes involved with a fallen country singer played by Paltrow. They embark on a career resurrection tour with her husband-manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester). Romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all.

Production is set to begin in January 2010 in Nashville.

Screen Gems' senior vp of production Nick Phillips will oversee the project for the studio.

CAA-repped Feste was the filmmaker behind the 2009 Sundance drama "The Greatest."

Country singer-turned-occasional actor McGraw, repped by CAA, can be currently seen in "The Blind Side" while Hedlund, repped by Wme and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, recently wrapped shooting Disney's "Tron Legacy. »

Amber Heard Dishes on The Stepfather

15 October 2009 10:05 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The busy young actress talks about her role in the remake and The Rum Diary as well

Amber Heard is easily one of the hottest young actresses out there, in more ways than one. After gaining acclaim for smaller roles in studio films like Friday Night Lights and portraying a young Charlize Theron in North Country and, of course, her lead performance as the title character in the cult horror classic All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, the actress has continued to add to her repertoire. The actress has more recently appeared in such hits as Never Back Down, Pineapple Express and the horror-comedy sensation Zombieland, Heard returns to theaters this weekend with the horror remake The Stepfather, which arrives in theaters on October 16. I met her and spoke with her briefly during my set visit last year, but earlier today I had the chance to speak with Heard exclusively »

Billy Bob Thornton Gets Boxing

21 August 2009 12:15 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The words "Ron Shelton" and "sports pic" go together like strawberries and cream, so it's always a good day when we hear that he's planning to make another one - say, a boxing film called Pound for Pound. And he's got Billy Bob Thornton to star in it, another actor who's generally suited to sports movies (although we're thinking more Friday Night Lights than Bad News Bears). It's based on the novel by Million Dollar Baby author F.X.Toole*, about a retired and widowed boxer (Thornton) mourning the death of his grandson. His life "intersects in unexpected ways" with a young up-and-coming Latino boxer, in what we're assured is a heartwarming story and not a total downer like that Clint Eastwood and Hilary Swank film.Shelton is both writing and directing, and shooting's due to take place early next year.*Sounds like something they use at Industrial Light and Magic. »

Tron Legacy: High-definition trailer plus latest on casting

3 August 2009 5:57 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Back in 1982, Disney's virtual-reality sci-fi adventure Tron seemed like a cutting-edge concept.

It's still way ahead of what can be achieved with real-world digital technology so it's no wonder the movie retains its cult status.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, interest in the sequel - now revealed to be called Tron Legacy - looked just as strong.

As I already reported, there was no new footage to show this year (filming on Legacy has only just wrapped) but the preview from last year's Comic-Con was screened again, this time converted into high-definition 3D.

This new HD trailer with its thrilling light-cycle race is now available online and I've included it above. Never have neon motorbikes looked so good...

To put the franchise into context, the original came out two years after Pac-Man was released on the world's arcades and a year after the arrival of Donkey Kong, the game that introduced us to Mario. »

NBC Shakes Up Schedule With Six New Scripted Series

5 May 2009 8:36 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – NBC held a special “in-front” announcement yesterday, two weeks in front of the standard upfront presentations and revealed six news series for the fall while leaving some beloved programs up in the air. On the bubble shows “Southland” and “Heroes” were renewed, but the jury is still out on “Chuck,” “Medium,” “Law & Order,” and “My Name is Earl”.

Of course, the focus of the peacock network in yesterday’s presentation was on “The Jay Leno Show,” which will air five nights a week in primetime, reducing time slots for new and returning programming. Consequently, if your favorite show doesn’t make it to the fall, blame Jay.

The NBC event did not unveil the actual complete schedule, just making a few announcements about new programming, so there are still a few question marks about some of its bubble shows but struggling “Southland,” “Heroes,” and “Parks and Recreation” did get the reprieve for the fall. »

Tron 2 Has A Lead User

6 January 2009 11:56 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Tron 2.0 has a leading man! Yeah I know, I was hoping it'd be Boxleitner or Bridges too but let's face it, they're kind of old. They'll be in the movie but Hr says it's a guy named Garrett Hedlund who will star. Apparently competition for the role was fierce. Disney is reported to have considered and met with a wide variety of actors including Ryan Gosling and the new Captain Kirk Chris Pine. I'm not sure if my geekhead could have handled the possibility of Captain Kirk in a Tron movie. Luckily, we will now never have to find out whether or not my head would explode. It's Hedlund who has the role and though you may not recognize his name you've probably seen him in a wide variety of high-profile projects. He was in Troy back in 2004 and he's one of the dudes in Friday Night Lights. Unfortunately he »
