Mandate Pics names Coleman, Crevello as vps

Mandate Pictures has named Drew Crevello and Scott Coleman vps production. The indie production and distribution company also has promoted Jim Miller to director of development and Jennie Yamaki to director of physical production. Crevello segues to Mandate from an executive post at Universal Pictures, where he worked on such films as Friday Night Lights, Jarhead and Land of the Dead. Before Universal, Crevello was director of development for producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen. Before moving to Mandate, Coleman was head of production at Gerber Pictures and worked on The Dukes of Hazzard. Before Gerber, he was vp production at Cecchi Gori Films and Hollywood Gang Prods. He also worked as a creative executive at the Canton Co. »

Universal Pictures has entered into a first-look production arrangement with director-writer Peter Berg and partners John Cameron and Sarah Aubrey via their newly formed production shingle, Film 44. Universal Pictures chairman Stacey Snider made the announcement Tuesday. The deal comes after a number of successful collaborations between the studio and Berg, including the recent feature Friday Night Lights. Berg also is set to direct the thriller The Kingdom for Universal, which Michael Mann is producing. "Pete, as an actor, writer and director has a great instinct about the business," Snider said. "Through the new production company, formed with Cameron and Aubrey, we know we will be receiving the most interesting, diverse and innovative films." »

In announcing nominations for the 17th Scripter Award -- which honors book-to-film adaptations -- the Scripter selection committee has injected several new titles into this year's awards race. The nominees, announced Friday, include both Warner Bros. Pictures' Million Dollar Baby and Fox Searchlight's Sideways, which have figured prominently on other nominations lists. But they also reached out to include The Door in the Floor, a drama about a family recovering from a tragedy released by Focus Features, and two Universal Pictures releases: the spy thriller The Bourne Supremacy and the study of high school football culture, Friday Night Lights. The award recognizes both the author of the original book and the screenwriters responsible for the film adaptation. »

Andre 3000 is Kast in Par's Wahlberg film

OutKast's Andre 3000 has signed on to star in Paramount Pictures and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura's untitled Mark Wahlberg project, formerly known as Four Brothers. It is the first major studio project for the hip-hop star. Tyrese and Garrett Hedlund (Friday Night Lights) also are on board. They'll play Andre 3000's siblings along with Wahlberg, who was previously announced as one of the brothers. Principal photography is scheduled to begin Monday in Toronto. John Singleton will direct the drama from a script by David Elliot and Paul Lovett about four brothers who seek to avenge their mother's death. »
