I can't believe it is almost twenty years since this show aired. It was probably the first detective show on Doordarshan (Indian public television), and was one of my favorite shows (probably one of the few shows that existed then, too!!) The plot revolves around the carrot ("gajar")-eating private detective Karamchand, and his secretary, Kitty, who, I think, was portrayed dumb (Kitty, don't be silly!) Or maybe my memory fails me. But it was enormous fun... gajar, anyone? :)
This show had extremely unusual but very effective humor and excellent
Pankaj Kapur and Sushmita Mukherjee were both awesome.
Also noteworthy, was the camera-work. The camera was a star in its own right. Often the shot started with a perplexing angle and the camera spun in all sorts of odd ways until it somehow ended the right way. You kept guessing where it will go next. The best part was that this was done in a way that never distracted you from the story, rather added to the mystery and the fun. It was truly extraordinary.
I think Pankaj Parashar was the director of the series.
Karamchand is back after 22 years on Sony TV. Amongst everything else,
I love the fact that the original title theme has been kept as it is.
Its simply amazing. One can also download the theme from Sony
Television's website. Although I was not much impressed by the first
episode but I'm sure it'll be a remarkable return of India's original
detective. Pankaj Kapur is such a versatile actor and the contrast
which he brings while playing Karamchand and on the other hand Mussadi
in Office Office is superb.
Pankaj Parashar created the original Karamchand and he's directing the new series as well. We can therefore expect the same thrills and the same camera work as mentioned in the previous review.
