The poem Maggie reads in the wedding scene is e.e. cummings's "I Carry Your Heart".
The original plan had Toni Collette as Maggie Feller and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Rose Feller. After Gellar dropped out, Collette agreed to play Rose.
Director Curtis Hanson approached Toni Collette before filming and asked the actress about gaining weight for the part. Collette had complied and proceeded to gain 25 pounds for the part, which she subsequently lost during the film's shooting which is to reflect her character.
The poems that Maggie reads to the bedridden professor are 'One Art' by Elizabeth Bishop and 'Let Evening Come' by Jane Kenyon.
Was never released on VHS making it one of the first movies to be released only on DVD.
Althought Cameron Diaz plays Toni Collette's younger sister, Diaz is 2 months older than Collette in real life.
The movie's Jamaican Jerk Hut locale which appears in two major scenes is an actual Philadelphia restaurant on South Street, west of Broad.
An animated open title sequence was created for the film a year before its release and then cut from the final picture when the producers decided to make the film seem more serious.

Cameo 

Jennifer Weiner:  the author and her agent appear walking behind Rose and her friend Amy in the Italian Market scene. Weiner's sister and the grandmother are also in the movie.
