Saturday Night Live Recap: Ronda Rousey Hosts

24 January 2016 4:16 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Our host for tonight is Ronda Rousey, who has won a lot of medals and championships for being Very, Very Strong. Like, seriously. She could knock you out in a second. It is a little terrifying, but also inspiring in a “You go, girl” kind of way. And now she’s got a burgeoning acting career, with roles in The Expendables 3, Furious 7, and Entourage 1 and God Willing Only. She will make her comedy debut in the upcoming Do Nothing Bitches, based on a script by Sisters writer Paula Pell in which Rousey plays a bootcamp instructor putting suburban housewives, one of which is played by Tina Fey, in their place. Tonight seemed to be Rousey’s chance to prove her comedy chops, but she honestly didn’t get much of a chance-- she only truly starred in one sketch, and made minimal to no appearances in all of the others. »

Sundance Film Review: ‘Trash Fire’

24 January 2016 12:15 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Misanthropy runs in the family in “Trash Fire,” an aggressively unpleasant black comedy with modest horror flourishes from director Richard Bates Jr. Gunning for cult status, the pic may find a small following among those who prefer their dialogue exclusively delivered in the form of insults, put-downs and offensive outbursts. But awkward execution and thriller elements that fail to ignite will keep this oddity limited to, if not the garbage heap, at least the VOD ghetto.

Topliner Adrian Grenier distances himself immediately from laidback “EntourageAlpha male Vinnie Chase in the role of miserable antihero Owen. As he tells his bored shrink (Sally Kirkland) in the abrasive opening scene, he’s wanted to kill himself for years but could never work up the courage, even after both his parents died in a freak fire that left his younger sister scarred for life.

From that character-illuminating introduction, the pic segues to »

‘Ip Man 3’ Actor Mike Tyson Believes His Fighting Background Gave Him an Edge

21 January 2016 1:48 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The third installment of the “Ip Man” series premiered Wednesday in Los Angeles at the Pacific Theaters at the Grove. While the movie bowed in Hong Kong over the holidays, both Donnie Yen (Ip Man) and Mike Tyson (Frank) attended the Los Angeles debut of “Ip Man 3,” with much appreciation from fans.

Before the screening, Well Go Svp Jason Pfardrescher led the audience in a classic “Ip Man” chant, complete with a brief Kung Fu move. Both Yen and Tyson introduced the film, eliciting applause from the audience.

“Ip Man 3” follows the iconic character Ip Man — the real-life Wing Chun Kung Fu master who mentored Bruce Lee — as he defends his son’s school when a band of gangsters led by crook Frank attempt to take over the city.

Although “Ip Man 3” has an abundance of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Yen explains he is an actor first, and a martial arts professional second. »

2015 offered some terrific films for audiences – The Martian, Creed, Straight Outta Compton, Brooklyn and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to name a few. They were huge crowd-pleasers and very successful at the box office. But not every movie connected with audiences this past year, as much as we wanted them to.

Wamg takes a look at the past 12 months and the movies that we really wanted to love, but just couldn’t. Here we go with our Top 10 list of the Most Disappointing Films of 2015.

It’s hard to decipher exactly what Jeff Bridges is saying under his accent that sounds like a cross between Gandalf and Bane from The Dark Knight Rises. And that is only one of the many problems with this film. Seventh Son is nothing but hallow, visual clutter that is cobbled together to form something that struggles to appeal to the »
