Disappointing DVD filler

Author: bob the moo from United Kingdom
12 July 2007

An interview with Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana relating to the formative seasons of the television show "Homicide: Life on the Street". Well, maybe interview is a bit generous of a description because really this doesn't probe or push anything, it comes over as merely a promo piece done to help sell the DVD by have extras on there. As a result we are not told anything of any significance that we didn't already know. Its not like Levinson and Fontana don't have anything of interest or insight to say, it is just that they are delivering as directed and their contributions edited together to be snappy and present an overall positive history of the show.

The blessing is that it is short so the "promo" approach works well enough as filler. However, if you consider it was suggesting that it was a review of the start of the series and the stories, where was David Simon? If you're looking at where the success came from then you've got to do more than mention that Levinson optioned the book some time before it hit the screen! Belzer is a welcome narrator but he hasn't got anything to work with and just lays on his sardonic accent as usual, hoping it will be enough.

Overall then, a DVD filler that is little more than a few promotional interviews edited together. It offers little in return for even ten minutes.
