"Monica la mitraille" is a biographical story of the real-life bank robber, Monica Proietti. Actress Celine Bonnier looks very much like her and accurate details from Proietti's life appear throughout the film. The movie comes across as a gangster film. Most gangster films show the background of the criminal, the rise, the period of thwarting the law, and the eventual outcome or downfall. This is no exception.
Bonnier dominates the film, presenting an interesting character, a female criminal in a man's world. She starts out dependent on men, brought up in an area rife with crime, relatively poor and an occasional hooker. She ends up her own woman, robbing banks with two other members of a gang. She's achieved some degree of liberation and independence.
The film runs long, showing her relationships with three different men and the development of her crime career along side her family life. Bonnier works hard at the role and this sometimes shows.
The film will surely interest those who followed her robberies and wonder who this woman was. Not knowing this going in, I kept wondering what the point of this movie was or why it was made. Its dramatization and bringing in of dramatic conflicts seemed weak. Showing a life or showing one thing after another do not produce drama, tension or suspense. Even surprise can be absent from such a depiction. The production values are good and the acting is good. The story has energy, Bonnier has lots of spirit, but these are not enough to lift the story from being on the monotonous side.
