Believe this movie. It is not square. There may have been a big screen, similar movie recently but there's no reason this shouldn't have been made. People who may never see `Thirteen' may see this. Purpose served. This movie is Horrifying. It's Terrifying. It's extremely important. Okay, the plot may have been exaggerated somewhat but actions that go on here DO EXIST in America. People say they don't believe it because they haven't seen it in their school. Very truthfully that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It does and this movie is a slice of it. No, this isn't a great movie by any means but its importance should overshadow that by a million miles. It was made in such a way to try to appeal to both parents and children - showing young teenage life in an MTV-kinda, digital videoy, hip hoppy documentary style at times while at other times really showing the concern of the parents... and in some cases the non-concern. One question I have is why is this set in an upper-middle class environment? This behavior in teens happens in ALL classes of society. In any case, there is no one answer to the problem in the end. Many parents in America just don't have the capacity to be a good parent. In Hannah's case, she had parents who loved her very much and who she didn't hate, she played cello, went to church and surely had an idea of what was wrong vs. what's right. Sadly, `popularity's a popular drug' and many kids get caught up in that despite a good upbringing. What else can be done? With the help of this movie maybe some parents will get a better grasp on their kids' lives. Maybe. Hopefully. My grade for this movie: C+ for how well it was made but it gets a firm A+++++ for how important it is.
