Weekend Report -'Compton' Tops the Charts Again

22 August 2015 8:27 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Straight Outta Compton fell 56% in its second weekend but still managed to take first place on the box office charts with $26.8M. It's Universal's 13th weekend with a film in the #1 position. Meanwhile the other new titles did little to turn around an August that can't compete with the record-breaking, $1B results of last year and the top 12 was down 10.46% from the same frame last year.Universal added 268 venues to the hit biopic's 2,757 venues, for a total of 3,025, which feels like a bit of a tacit admission by the studio that they should have opened Compton wider its first week. They increased the theater count for Jurassic World only 17 screens its second week, but that brought it to a whopping 4,291. Furious 7 was only given 18 more screens its second week but that brought it up to 4,022. Still, Compton's per screen average (psa) its first week was $21,835, while Jurassic World astonished »

Lily Tomlin: Not Your Everyday ‘Grandma’

21 August 2015 9:58 AM, PDT | Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy | See recent Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy news »

Paul Weitz can’t and won’t be pigeonholed, as writer or director. His credits range from American Pie and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps to About a Boy and In Good Company. His latest effort debuted to great response earlier this year at South by Southwest, an ideal showcase for this indie drama. Grandma offers Lily Tomlin a juicy leading role and audiences a satisfying experience on a modest scale. What really makes it work is Weitz’s attention to detail in delineating his characters and his keen eye for casting. Every part matters to him; even actors who have just a few lines manage to leave an impression, among them Laverne Cox and the late Elizabeth Peña. ...

Time Machine: Sensational Scarlett J. in Purple

7 May 2015 8:48 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Scarlett Johansson Oscar dress Scarlett Johansson at the Oscars Looking great in a long purple dress, Scarlett Johansson displays her tight-fitting costume and bare back at the 83rd Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Oscar 2011 co-host and Best Actor nominee James Franco (for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours) thus introduced Johansson and fellow Oscar presenter Matthew McConaughey: "I am six degrees of Kevin Bacon away from our next two presenters. Figure it out on the Internet." Well, if you're lucky. Some have remarked that Franco was a more effective Oscar host online, where he tweeted some of the evening's to-dos, than on the stage of the Kodak Theatre. His fellow equally panned Oscarcast host was actress Anne Hathaway. Scarlett Johansson movies Scarlett Johansson has been featured in more than 40 films since her debut at age 10 in Rob Reiner's North, back in 1994. Johansson, in fact, »

Tff 2015 Daily Recap: April 17th

17 April 2015 10:09 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

“Live from New York, it’s the Tribeca Film Festival.”

I’m sure that is how some people’s coverage of this year’s Tff started off. It makes sense considering the opening night film was a documentary about Saturday Night Live! Plus, some writers can’t help but resort to puns and cheap gimmicks to appear witty. Hell, I used it and haven’t even seen the film yet. But my TriBeCa experience didn’t start off with belly laughs. Instead it began with a double feature of films about shitty parents.

The Adderall Diaries stars James Franco as an author struggling with writer’s block, which could be the inspiration for my deconstruction of an opening to this recap. The film is based on the memoir of the same title by Stephen Elliott. Franco’s version of Elliott deals with drug addiction (mostly Adderall), a Bdsm fetish that could ruin a burgeoning relationship, »

Watchers on the Wall: 'Game of Thrones' and the Crumbling Barrier Between TV and Movies

9 January 2015 4:30 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

There's surely no better place than an IMAX screen to watch a story about a 700-foot-high wall.

But the announcement this week that the two most recent "Game of Thrones" episodes (the epic ice battle episode "The Watchers on the Wall" and the shocking Season 4 finale "The Children") and a Season 5 trailer are coming to IMAX screens on Jan. 23 brings to mind another wall under assault -- the increasingly academic wall between movies and TV.

Granted, it makes sense for HBO to give theatergoers a healthy helping of its popular swords-and-skin fantasy series. After all, as large as George R.R. Martin's saga looms in pop culture chatter, there's still a majority of Americans who don't subscribe to the premium cable channel and haven't seen the show. The IMAX event is a good way to mobilize both newbies and longtime fans and to get both groups primed for this spring's new season. »
