• Errors in geography: During several episodes captive birds are shown. There are Macaws and Amazon parrots from America, and cockatoos from Australia. Since the continents these birds came from were unknown to the Romans, who would not have been able to travel there and bring these animals back to Rome with them.
  
  
• Anachronisms: The Romans did not practice circumcision. Even the Jews of this time period did not practice the full circumcision (Brit Peri'ah) depicted.
  
  
• Factual errors: The words Domina and Dominus are practically the only Latin words the cast uses regularly. Nevertheless, as they are always used as vocative, the masculine form should be Domine. More than that, the spoken Latin of the higher classes is inadequately close to ecclesiastical late Latin.
  
  

• Anachronisms: The real Atia (Octavian's mother) died in 43 B.C. In the series she is still alive in 31 B.C.
  
  
• Factual errors: At the beginning of the series Lucius Vorenus is the primus pilas, or senior centurion, of the Thirteenth Legion. In the show he is referred to as "First Spear Centurion;" this is a mistranslation of his title. The correct translation of primus pilas in this sense would be "first file," meaning the front line of the legion.
