Film Review: ‘Unfinished Business’

4 March 2015 6:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A comedy with its heart in the right place and everything else bizarrely out of joint, “Unfinished Business” finds director Ken Scott following 2013’s “Delivery Man” with another dubious attempt to sell audiences on Vince Vaughn’s sensitive side. Playing a down-on-his-luck family man who takes an ill-advised business trip to Berlin with two unfunny sidekicks in tow (Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco), Vaughn is admittedly the least of the movie’s worries: Awkwardly wrapping a heartwarming message of self-acceptance in a layer of crude sexual humor, it’s like a date who tries to pat you on the back with one hand while feeling you up with the other. As such, “Unfinished” looks unlikely to do much business, or to end the nearly decade-long string of mediocrities (“Fred Claus,” “Four Christmases,” “The Dilemma,” “The Watch,” “The Internship”) that has plagued its star, whose fans are advised to keep whetting »

Gore Verbinski to Direct Driverless Car Comedy for Sony

19 February 2015 8:52 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Sony Pictures has acquired a pitch from director Gore Verbinski and writer Steve Conrad for a project revolving around driverless cars. The comedy reunites the writer and director, who previously collaborated on The Weather Man and were set to make the North Korean-set Pyongyang, before 20th Century Fox pulled out in December. This new movie is currently untitled, but it is being called the Driverless Car Race for now.

The story is described as a large-scale action-adventure that centers on a transcontinental race with driverless cars. The race begins as a beta test between competing software companies that would spearhead a driverless car initiative, but it quickly takes an unexpected turn as these companies turn this test into a major race from Paris to Beijing. The plot centers on normal people who are passengers in these autonomous cars, who try to take control of the experiment as these vehicles go off-road and off the grid. »

Sony Pictures has picked up a pitch from director Gore Verbinski and writer Steve Conrad, who previously teamed on 2005's Nic Cage film "The Weather Man," for an untitled project which has been nicknamed "Driverless Car Race".

The story is described as a large-scale action-adventure that centers on a transcontinental race with driverless cars. Starting out as a beta test between competing software companies to spearhead a driverless car initiative, it quickly takes an unexpected turn as the test becomes a major race from Paris to Beijing.

The focus will be on the everyday people who are passengers in these autonomous cars who try to take control of the experiment as these vehicles go off-road and off the grid. In a statement, Verbinski says:

"Essentially, we are going to take the funniest comedic actors of this generation and slowly unleash them as we examine the very notion of 'passengers' who fundamentally cannot remain passive. »
