Tim Burton's Corpse Bride fell short of the $20.1 million that Warner Bros. had estimated it would earn over the weekend, coming in at $19.1 million. Analysts had indicated before the final results came in that, with the No. 1 film, Flightplan, earning $24.6 million, for the first time two films had taken in more than $20 million on a single September weekend. The results, however, were the best for any animated film opening in September. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date): 1. Flightplan, Disney, $24,629,938, (New); 2. The box office took flight over the weekend as two new movies performed far better than analysts' predictions. Disney's Flightplan, starring Jodie Foster, premiered with $24.6 million, while Warner Bros.' animated Corpse Bride, widening its release, earned $20.1 million. Daily Variety observed that it was the first time that two new films opened with more than $20 million in September. The two hits helped push the weekend box office 39 percent above the figure for the same weekend a year ago, despite the fact that dozens, if not hundreds, of theaters were closed because of Hurricane Rita. (Houston, which was evacuated, is the fourth-largest market in the U.S.) A third new film, Roll Bounce, opened with $8 million, putting it in fourth place, just behind last week's box-office winner, Just Like Heaven, whose gross declined 40 percent to $9.8 million. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations: 1. Flightplan, $24.6 million; 2. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, $20.1 million; 3. Just Like Heaven, $9.8 million; 4. Roll Bounce, $8 million; 5. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, $7.5 million; 6. Lord of War, $4.9 million; 7. The 40-Year-Old Virgin, $4.3 million; 8. The Constant Gardener, $2.2 million; 9. Transporter 2, $2.15 million; 10. Cry_Wolf, $2.1 million. …

The numbers may have been short of heavenly, but the romantic comedy Just Like Heaven won the weekend box-office contest with $16.4 million, on the low end of analysts' predictions. And while the remainder of the marquee titles also failed to attract big crowds, the crowds that they did attract were at least bigger than last year's -- something that could not be said about most box-office weekend outcomes this year. According to Exhibitor Relations, sales for the top 12 films rose 13 percent from the comparable weekend a year ago. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date): 1. Just Like Heaven, DreamWorks, $16,408,718, (New); 2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Screen Gems, $14,851,719, 2 Wks. ($51,561,110); 3. Lord of War, Lions Gate, $9,390,144, (New); 4. After making box-office analysts look really bad for two weeks in a row, moviegoers reverted to form and landed at movie theaters in more-or-less predicted numbers. They spent $16.5 million to see DreamWorks' Just Like Heaven (analysts figured it would earn $16-19 million). Seventy-seven percent of the audience was female, according to the studio. "That's the highest percentage of women I can ever remember for one of our films," DreamWorks distribution chief Jim Tharp told USA Today. Two other new releases were well off analysts' forecasts. Lions Gate's R-rated Lord of War, starring Nicolas Cage, opened in third place with an estimated $9.2 million, while Rogue Pictures' Cry_Wolf took in only $4.6 million. Last weekend's champ, Sony/ScreenGems's The Exorcism of Emily Rose, performed reasonably well in its second week, landing in second place with an estimated $15.3 million. Meanwhile, in its 13th week, March of the Penguins picked up an additional $2.6 million, putting it in ninth place (up from tenth last week) and bringing its total now to $70.4 million. Exhibitor Relations chief Paul Dergarabedian, noting that Fahrenheit 9/11 holds the record for documentaries -- $119 million, a record most analysts had figured would remain safe for years to come -- told the Associated Press, "It's an amazing run. ... Nobody ever thought this would have a chance of challenging Fahrenheit." The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations: 1. Just Like Heaven, $16.5 million; 2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose, $15.3 million; 3. Lord of War, $9.2 million; 4. The 40 Year-Old Virgin, $5.8 million; 5. Cry_Wolf, $4.6 million; 6.
