Rowan Woods. Aftrs has appointed new heads of directing, documentary, cinematography and visual effects.

Head of directing is Rowan Woods, head of documentary Rachel Landers, head of cinematography Kim Batterham and head of visual effects Susan Danta.

First look at Sa apocalyptic thriller Cargo

The first production still has been released from Cargo, starring Sherlock.s Martin Freeman.

Currently shooting in South Australia, the film is based on Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling.s 2013 Tropfest short. Ramke wrote the script, and tshe and Howling are making their feature directorial debuts.

Liz Watts set to produce Mary Magdalene biopic with See-Saw

Producer Liz Watts will join See-Saw Films. (Lion, The King.s Speech) Iain Canning and Emile Sherman to produce a biopic on the life of Mary Magdalene.

Set to begin shooting in Europe later this year, Watts (The Rover, Animal Kingdom, Little Fish) will produce Mary Magdelene through her Sydney-based production company Porchlight Films. Watts has previously worked with See-Saw on the company.s 2012 production, Dead Europe.

Garth Davis (Top of the Lake, Lion) will direct from a script written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett (How to Talk to Girls at Parties).

Rooney Mara (Carol, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is attached to play Magdelene and Joaquin Phoenix (Her, Walk the Line) is in talks to play Jesus.

Producer Liz Watts joins 'Mary Magdalene'

The founder of Sydney-based Porchlight Films has teamed up with the UK’s See-Saw Films on the prestige drama ahead of a European production start later this year.

Tahar Rahim is in talks to play Judas in the biopic alongside Rooney Mara in the title role. Joaquin Phoenix in is negotiations to play Jesus and Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to play the apostle Peter.

Garth Davis will direct from a screenplay by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett.

Watts, who launched Porchlight in 1997 with producer Vincent Sheehan and co-director Anita Sheehan, collaborated with See-Saw on 2012 drama Dead Europe.

Her credits include David Michôd’s Animal Kingdom, The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe, The Rover starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and Little Fish with Cate Blanchett.

She most recently served as executive producer on eight-part detective series The Kettering Incident and is working in the same role on the feature adaptation of Jasper Jones starring Levi Miller, [link »

Screen Nsw's new-look script development program, Amplifier, replaces the agency's biennial Aurora workshop, which nurtured the likes of Somersault, Little Fish, Cut Snake and Animal Kingdom.

Amplifier will also take place every two years, but will place greater emphasis on the market, according to Screen Nsw CEO Courtney Gibson.

"One of the key differences will be the opportunity to work directly with exhibitors and distributors as part of the development process," Gibson said..

"We want to deliver as many films as possible into cinemas. And that means having critical engagement with distribution and exhibition during the screenwriting process, rather than at the back end."

In addition, the initial in-person workshop with mentors will no longer be quite so central to the process.

Spectrum Films has moved into its new home at Fox Studios after a raft of key appointments..

The new site on the second floor of the Frank Hurley Building at Fox Studios Australia is now operational..

With Adam Scott now a partner in the business working in tandem with Josh Pomeranz, Spectrum Films "3.0" offers refined technical services including edit suites, online picture finishing, colour grading and a custom built sound mixing theatre, as well as sound design, editing and post sound management.

The new post facility will be looked after by recently appointed post producer, Catherine Armstrong, and head of sound, Angus Robertson.

Damian Candusso joins Trackdown

Sound designer Damian Candusso has joined Trackdown to provide sound design and audio post production services from the Sydney studio.

Candusso has contributed to the soundtracks of The Lego Movie, The Great Gatsby, Little Fish and Happy Feet 1 and 2.

He is also an active researcher in film sound, immersive cinema and virtual reality and has received a PhD for research into immersive cinema, 3-D film and the soundtrack.

Candusso has been nominated for Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) Golden Reel Awards and has worked on several Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award winning films.

Damian has also received the Centenary Medal for Contribution to Australian Culture for his work in the Australian film industry.
