Storyline

Brilliant Oklahoma storm chaser Peter Jensen looses his wife Mary in an unpredictable tornado. Emotionally wrecked, he moves to Portland, in the safe north. Ten years later, he visits his mother in law Margaret Harrington to attend his daughter Kara's graduation. She accepted a job with her lover, Dr. John Tedesco, in Dr. Raymond Ardmore's new epidemiological institute, EDAC. John worries it be unsafely built by a dodgy contractor. Peter's former assistant Robert Booker shows him new research, which indicates monster storms ahead. TV reporters Jerry and Julia taken an interest in both. But the risks collide. Trivia

Unused footage from Twister (1996) was used in the opening credits after the first tornado sequence. See more »

Goofs

A smart meteorologist would have not taken cover under an overpass, the reason being is that when a tornado gets close to the overpass the winds passing through it would greatly increase due to the wind-tunnel effect. In reality the tornado should have sucked out the people seeking shelter under the overpass and the van for obvious reasons. See more »

More tornado tosh

DEVIL WINDS is the latest in a string of TV disaster movies I've seen. This one's quite obviously a spin on TWISTER, except of course it's nowhere near as good as that (average in itself) production. It's a film packed with grotty soap opera and boring dialogue and not nearly enough disaster.

I knew this was going to be poor when I saw the attempted acting of the mother in the opening scene, which is laughable to say the least. It gets worse from there. The male lead is invariably wooden, the female lead an ageing has-been who was once on BAYWATCH, and the family drama type stuff is intensely grating.

Scenes involving actual tornadoes are limited to the beginning, middle and end. There's a funny scene of a twister chasing a jeep, and later on a bit where a twister destroys a building. With nobody inside it, who cares? The CGI effects are pitiful, and looked like something out of THE SIMS at one point.

No real reason to bother with this one, even genre aficionados will be sorely pressed to find something of merit.
