31 December 2009 3:40 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.

Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak didn’t get a chance to perform her new single (yes, she recorded an album!) “Tardy for the Party” on The Ellen Show … but have no fear! She recorded a performance for Ellen’s Web site.  Kim, we know “it’s your world.”  And we will never be tardy for the party again!

So, what do you think? Love it or hate it? »

Ellen talks success and being in love on "The Oprah Show"

9 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

The recent appearance of Ellen DeGeneres on The Oprah Show was called "An Oprah Show special event" and it really was, especially in terms of lesbian visibility. As her own wife refers to her, "the most famous lesbian in the world" joined Oprah for a discussion on her career, her marriage and her O Magazine cover campaign from the past year.

Here are some choice moments:

Ellen on coming out:

When I came out, it was celebrated but reports kept reporting on the reports, and people were like 'Shut up already," but I didn't say anything.

On The Ellen Show being canceled:

No one called to say it had been canceled. I had to read it in the trades. I knew there was a possibility of losing my career, but I didn't do it for my career — I did it for me to live in my truth. There was no shame. »

Taylor Swift/Lautner Mania in Full Swing

29 October 2009 11:37 PM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Admit it; you are just as caught up in Taylor mania as everyone else around you. It's hard not to be curious or even envious of the bond budding between the New Moon hunk Taylor Lautner and the country/pop superstar Taylor Swift. The two are always spotted grinning, giggling, and enjoy each other's company which leads many to believe they are a couple. We are three weeks away from the New Moon La premiere and the hottest slice of chatter right now is whether or not Taylor Lautner will bring his good friend Taylor Swift to the premiere. Many are speculating that bringing her to the event will be their coming out party, so the shutter bugs are preparing to catch that money shot. Chances are if they do show together that picture will be worth lots of dough, maybe as much as the Britney Spears head shave. Taylor Swift »

"You and Me and He" will follow a lesbian relationship on CBS

5 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

File under: Finally! Last week, CBS ordered a lesbian-centric sitcom script from out writer-comedian Carol Leifer. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Inspired in part by Leifer's real-life situation of being in a long-term, same-sex relationship and having a child with her partner, the CBS show, tentatively titled You and Me and He, centers on a recently divorced woman who enters a gay relationship only to find out that she is pregnant with her ex-husband's baby.

It does kind of sound like Ross/Susan/Carol's storyline from Friends, but this time it's being told by a lesbian, from the perspective of the lesbians. So shelve that skepticism and put down CBS' GLAAD report card (Grade: Failing) and cross your fingers with me.

If you don't recognize Leifer's name, you'll definitely recognize her work. She was the creator and writer of the short-lived The Ellen Show, the hopeful reincarnation of Ellen DeGeneres »

Carol Leifer sets up at CBS, Showtime

1 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Carol Leifer got her writing break on "Seinfeld" with the "Lip Reader" episode, her first produced script.

Now she has reteamed with Marlee Matlin, who guest starred on that episode, and actor-comedian Mario Cantone for a single-camera comedy at Showtime.

The Fox TV Studios-produced project, which would star Matlin and Cantone, is one of two half-hour projects that writer-comedian Leifer has in the works.

At CBS, she has received a script order for a multicamera comedy produced by Sony Pictures TV and Happy Madison.

Inspired in part by Leifer's real-life situation of being in a long-term, same-sex relationship and having a child with her partner, the CBS show, tentatively titled "You and Me and He," centers on a recently divorced woman who enters a gay relationship only to find out that she is pregnant with her ex-husband's baby.

Sharon Osbourne says she could get arrested for saying how she feels about Robert Pattinson

14 September 2009 1:44 PM, PDT | Twilight Examiner | See recent Twilight Examiner news »

Sharon Osbourne was interviewed on The Ellen Show recently and did a photographic reaction spot with Ellen regarding certain celebrities. "You say exactly what's on your mind," says Ellen to Osbourne. After taking a turn talking about David Beckham, Lady Gaga, Jon & Kate, Ellen showed Osbourne a photo of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, and Remember Me star Robert Pattinson. Immediately, Osbourne cradled the photograph in her bosom and smiled ear to ear. "I think I could get arrested if I said what I wanted to do with him." »

Ellen DeGeneres as the fourth judge: Is this the end of 'American Idol' as we know it?

10 September 2009 5:55 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Chalk me up as one of those people who greeted the news that Ellen DeGeneres is joining the judging panel for season 9 of American Idol with the sudden urge to drive a fork into my thigh and wake up from a strange and horrible nightmare. (Side note: We all do dream about Idol on a regular basis, right? Right.) Now don't get me wrong. I adore Ellen DeGeneres. As a comedian, that is. I've seen her live in concert twice. I watched every episode of The Ellen Show (her short-lived 2001 series with Cloris Leachman, not to be confused with the groundbreaking sitcom Ellen, which I also loved). Heck, I'd even tune in to something as hein as the People's Choice Awards if they brought her in as host. But as a permanent replacement for Paula Abdul as the fourth judge on my very most favorite television show? Can I get »

DeGeneres To Defend Talk Show Title At Daytime Emmys

14 May 2009 12:20 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Ellen DeGeneres will get the chance to defend her title as America's favourite TV personality after scooping two nominations for this year's Daytime Emmy Awards.

Last year, the comedienne took home the title of Outstanding Talk Show Host, but her star-studded programme The Ellen DeGeneres Show lost out for the first time in the Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment category since its first nomination in 2004.

This time around, she'll face competition for the hosting award from Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa (Live with Regis & Kelly), TV chef Rachael Ray, and The View talk show hosts Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Elizabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd and Joy Behar.

Meanwhile, DeGeneres and her show's producers will face-off against Live with Regis & Kelly and Rachael Ray to take back the Best Show title.

However, veteran actress Susan Lucci has been snubbed from the list of nominees, after missing out in the Lead Dramatic Actress category in favour of All My Children co-star Debbie Morgan. Morgan will go up against Maura West (As the World Turns), Susan Haskell (One Life to Live), Susan Flannery (The Bold and the Beautiful) and Jeanne Cooper (The Young and the Restless).

In the male category, nominees for Outstanding Lead Actors In A Drama include Thorsten Kaye (All My Children), Peter Reckell (Days of Our Lives), Anthony Geary (General Hospital), Daniel Cosgrove (Guiding Light) and Christian LeBlanc (The Young and the Restless).

Supermodel-turned-talk show host Tyra Banks will also have a chance to follow up her 2008 Daytime Emmy with another prize - The Tyra Banks Show is nominated alongside Dr. Phil and new programme The Doctors in the Outstanding Talk Show/Informative category.

PBS' Sesame Street will receive the lifetime achievement award.

The 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, hosted by actress/singer Vanessa Williams, will air on 30 August. »
