Storyline

"Cinderella" played out at a contemporary L.A. high school, where Cindy and her gay friend Justin are the only two kids not going to the prom. Cindy is teased mercilessly by her step-mother and step-sisters. On prom night, Justin dresses Cindy as a young man and loans her his dad's orange VW bug, which she must return by midnight. At the prom, Cindy is unrecognized and dances with her heartthrob, Laurie, the prom queen. The next day, with the help of Cindy's little black boot, which she left behind at the dance, the truth will come out. What will Laurie do? Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Laurie: So, why haven't I seen you around?
Cindy: Maybe you haven't been looking in the right places.
Laurie: Do you go out with anybody?
Cindy: Ah... no.
Laurie: Where do you go to school?
Cindy: [changing the subject] Tell me three things you like.
Laurie: I like public radio. And I like Nicole Kidman. And I like stealing my parents car keys and just driving around at two in the morning. And... you. That's four things.

Same-sex Cinderella in High School
1 March 2004 | by See all my reviews

Really a lovely little film which could so easily have run off the rails, as so many lesbian and gay-themed films do.

A same-sex Cinderella story which stays ahead of its audience at every juncture.

The two female leads are delightful, as is Jane Lynch as the over-the-top-yet-believable step mother.

This sure-handed director, with the right material, could go on to make excellent comedies.

I really recommend it.

Four stars.
