long and dumb

At first it seems like a cool movie, the trailer made it look like a good version of the old "American pie".

The plot is these three guys trying to get laid, and thats funny for about 2 minutes, and the ugly faces they make when they approach the women makes this a childish and boring movie.

It's correctly rated R, if MTV aired this movie, a lot of "beeps" would occur during the film.

They try to make it hip by using gangster slang, like Snoop Dogg "foh shiezel" stuff. Thats only cool when Snoop do it.

In the middle of the film you get this impression that its made by lame college students, filmed with a cheap camcorder. The dialogs are crappy, and they even added some lame interviews with a guy dressed like a woman petting his dog.

All in all this is a crappy movie, you even get tired of thinking how ugly they all are.

The Urban Answer To American Pie.
BoogsBunny11 July 2005
Sweet Potato Pie was pretty much a blatant and unfunny rip-off of American Pie, right down to the obligatory pie-humping scene. This movie could have been better, perhaps if the Wayans Brothers were doing it but this felt like it was a college project on Amateur Hour or something.

The plot is even nearly identical. Three guys, who happen to be virgins decide they are ready to lose their virginity and are willing to do almost anything to make it happen. Chuck (Clabron Hinkles), Perry (Marc 7) and Trey (Jason Rossow) try everything from calling up a porn director they know and getting a tryout to paying a stripper to trying to get a "happy ending" from a masseuse. Needless to say, they seem to screw things up, sometimes in an embarrassing way. Just to clarify, even with the pie-humping, Clabron Hinkles is no Jason Biggs with his comedic timing.

Sweet Potato Pie had very few redeeming qualities and I was reluctant to rate it as high as I did but the fact is, I have still seen movies that are worse. MUCH worse and that's why I rate it a low 4/10 while recommending you pass this one by.

Simply the worst

This film is very bad. Not bad enough to absolutely not continue watching, but that in itself is bad enough. The actors are pretty lame and try to compensate by being over the top and dramatic, but even so these grand dramatics do not add amusement or entertainment.

One of the main actors insists on taking of his clothes of at every opportunity much to my horror as he seems to have a half shaved chest or some kind of pigment discolouration which just made me feel ill at the mere sight of it.

In summary this is a lame rip off of American Pie, down to the sex scene with the pie. I would say don't do it, specially at the prices they are trying to charge for it on DVD!

Dale Stelly deserves credit
tedthumb27 September 2008
Sweet Potato Pie by writer/director Dale Stelly has a uncanny knack for making comedy movies that are actually FUNNY. This entire movie was probably made for less than it costs to hire a personal assistant to wipe the arse of Spike Lee. Sweet Potato Pie is a great alternative to American Pie.

Dale Stelly infuses this movie with an urban touch that works. Back when Spike Lee made good movies this would be one that I could see him making. I have a theory that some movie makers get ruined when they have too much money to spend. Dale Stelly will move on to bigger and better movies. My hopes are he does not go the way of Spike Lee.

Sweet Potato Pie is comedy for move fans that are tired of milk toast.
