OK if your a kid with no expectations
cagne-122 April 2006
Saying this movie has bad acting is being unfair to bad actors. My wife walked into the room and remarked on one of the child actor's apparent "issues" but then realized that it was just a very bad performance. But, all the talent (with the exception of the eldest son) in this movie is on an equal, very bad level. This includes the writing and direction and editing and art direction and everything else so one really can't blame the kids. This is an after school movie that couldn't find a school to go after.

On the other hand, my 9 year old watched the whole thing and he can be a tough sell. Go figure...

acting very slow
tmburr21 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
My 6 year old enjoys this movie, but hasn't a clue of course in the unbelievability of the storyline, and this excludes the "mission" of the children with regards to communicating with a ghost.

The incredibly "slow, straight faced" acting of especially the mother of the children when she finds out about the IRS is unbelievable.

Without researching the claim at all of this huge debt supposedly owed, she simply shuffles away, leaving a teenager in charge of her business for 2 weeks?!?

No reaction except "we owe the IRS money (enough to purchase a home in some parts of the country)but don't worry kids, everything will be fine." (no tears? no frantic calls to the IRS?)

Botox injections must have been administered throughout, this lady's acting is worse than amateur.

But maybe the realistic details were purposely left out. Maybe the realistic reaction that would be expected from the mother and grandmother (where is the father and grandfather??)was not important after all, this was suppose to be for kids who would not understand such details in the first place.

The children's acting was a reflection of the director. Sure they could have put a little more "spunk" into their parts, but it seems the children's acting style simply was following the acting style of the adults in the movie: SLOW.

Worst acting in a long time
idonotexist29 January 2004
Warning: Spoilers
**some spoilers but you really have nothing to spoil**

This has to be some of the worst acting i have seen in a very long time. It's bland, non inspirated, and frankly, nobody is even trying. That said, this movie goes all over the place. For a ghost story it throws in debt, corporate management, struggling parents, small town buy out, you name it. So at the end of the day, the kids save the day by raising 300k, which their mom owes the IRS so she won't have to sell the shop to the corporate suits which want to build something in its place. Even for a kids movie, it's stupid, and even my girlfriend's 6 year old sister didn't laugh... which is why i was watching this in the first place.

i have seen this movie and really sucks big time, not only the child acting also the adults are so fake that u can't imagine. Not even good for kids, maybe up to 4 year old. The plot, the story, the script, the acting OMG i can't believe. This doesn't rate even for Z category.

An hour and a half of my life... wasted.
x_stepping_stones_x24 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I don't even know why this movie was made. The plot is totally unoriginal, and the acting is painful to watch! I don't know how many times I heard one of the actor's/actress' lines and went: "WHAT? That's stupid!" You want an example?

"If it makes a child happy, it's always the right thing to do." Excuse me? If a child wanted to go bungee jumping off a jumbo jet without a bungee cord because it would make them happy would you let them?

"If you don't know what it is, how can you be afraid of it?" Hmmm, well believe it or not, people are usually scared of things that are unknown to them.

On to the bad acting. I have to say, although the kids acting is just downright excruciating, the adults are way worse. Put yourself in the mother's position: your children have just stolen your car and you have no idea where they are. What's your initial reaction? I'll bet it doesn't involve showing no emotion and saying (in a monotone voice, I might add) "Oh no. The kids are gone and so is the car." And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

On the upside, though, it's hilarious!

Very Bad Acting!
Jonas_fan1127 December 2006
This movie had a very good base, but the acting was horrendous, and horrible! This is the worst acting that I have ever seen! Except for the adults, they were pretty good. For this movie if they got better actors and actresses this movie would be an excellent movie! Whenever something scary happened all of the actors and actresses wouldn't even act scared they would just run, they would also scream but it definitely wasn't real! I am definitely not seeing this movie ever again! No wonder I have never heard of any of these actors and actresses, for most of them this was the first and probably only thing they have ever done, and I can most definitely tell why! I most definitely do not recommend this movie for any age groups!

Warning! Out on OnDemand now!
FamMon30 April 2006
I just rented this for my children from TWC's OnDemand. I couldn't finish watching it and I don't even think my 6-year-old will make it to the end. Frankly, we're all mad because we were charged $3.95, the same price as a new movie. This movie is lame in EVERY cinematic category. Nothing personal to the child actors. Your criticized performance is not your fault. That's why you have a director. Unfortunately, the director did not have a director. I just rented this for my children from TWC's OnDemand. Can You say ROBOT?
sajeffre17 May 2005
The acting in this movie was like lead and some of the worst I have seen. Not just the kids, but the adults as well.

I know this is a kid's movie, but even my imaginary play was more creative than this.

The script is awful, the acting worse, every "twist" is expected, and there is really no suspense at all.

The animated movies we watch with my son are so much better in script etc. Perhaps not the worst movie ever, but pretty close.

The characters are too "obvious" and the concept is no better than the imaginary play that I used to engage in as a child.

Cute movie
cuathemovies27 February 2004
Give these kids a break! I thought the two girls and the red headed boy did a very good job. There were some weaker performers within the movie, but it does not diminish the quality of their performances. It was refreshing not to have to worry about language or sexual situations in a kids' movie. There were a lot of diversions which could muddy the plot for small kids, and I thought the style of the director kept the kids a little "too organized," ie, kids tend to run not walk when they are excited and rarely stand in perfect lines. Overall, it was refreshing to see a movie without special effects in which the kids actually thought about someone other than themselves and were able to work together as friends.

Something worthwhile
pmichener195412 March 2018
I read other reviews about bad acting. Forget it. Young people cutting their teeth on their early roles. Brit Robertson has done many fine projects since, including a very fine performance in Disney's Avalon High, Relax and watch this movie for what it is, light family entertainment,

Wonderful Kids Flick
tommartinez16 January 2005
As far as Kid Actors, you can't get much better. Maybe "The Sixth Sense" or "Road to Perdition" but those are not for kids. The plot might be a little far fetched but what movie isn't? It is refreshing to see how little kids can entertain us old folks for an hour and a half. I was holding my breath and almost passed out when the little runts entered the haunted house. So scary, so well filmed I could only scream aloud, "Wow that's some good stuff"! It reminds me of how "The Exorcist" made me feel: the nervous sweat, the rapid heartbeat, and the dry mouth. The only cure for what I got would be a quick release of the sequel. Anyhow, I loved this movie so much I bought the video and recommend all kids under fifteen to go out and buy this silly little flick. Peace Out.

Yes, v 1.01
annevejb4 June 2009
On the surface this has lots of weak acting by the kids, a particular verbal style, and I like the review that suggests that being tolerant is worth it, that these are just kids after all.

These days there is a rather high standard in the quality of stories on film, but most of the best include flaws. Including deliberate flaws. The 'weak acting' is glaring, more than is often the case, but look the other way there is a story and, cringe of cringes, I wonder if the weak acting is actually a built in part of the story. To guess that I look to the final scene when ghost catcher is definitely wearing a bra. It seemed likely before but here the broad strap around her back stands out under her top. Also, the ham verbal style is gone. That disappeared after the ghost showed catcher an object that catcher needed.

As a double check, if one looks to other features that the ghost catcher, Brittany Robertson, has had a part, small roles in Jesse Stone, Night Passage (2006) and Keeping Up With The Steins (2006), there is varied styles of acting of solid quality.

To like this I needed to be able to shrug off the flaws. If the ham is deliberate I would prefer otherwise in this case. I still found it practical to get to like this.

I assume that the very young might like this story and to them the flaws might not be blatant, more the way that stories for the very, very young sometimes are?

Those who are returning to childhood. Those who have been sunk to the level of ghost might find Ghost Club to be easy to work to like. If not seen too often.

Others, well it is called the The Ghost Club, after all. This does not have the popularity rating of an animal's shrieking shack.

Further, what the story is, I am not so sure that is a relevant issue. What counts is other. There has been an adventure that entailed spy and inventor and younger brother and occasionally older brother joining ghost catcher to save her family, with the help of someone long dead. Ghost catcher grows in a rather nice and well rounded way and that is what counts.

*

From a different angle. If I take the story seriously it makes for an interesting comparison with My Girl (1991). That has Vada facing a disastrous rite of passage that leads to her wearing a symbolic bra. It has a much wider appeal than the Ghost Club will ever have. My Girl is not a story for the youngest, though.

What did you ever do well at 11?
Keester8 January 2024
To all those giving negative reviews of the child actors in the movie: What did you do well at your first try when you were eleven years of age?

You all can't even write a review as adults without mocking some kids doing their best. What poor examples of human beings you all are.

not the worst movie ever
lauren1581-117 September 2004
all of the critics need to remember that it's a kid's movie. kids starred in the movie. can you really expect that much? it's not supposed to be very in depth, plot twisting, or cause too much thinking. and it was obviously low budget, but well done for the price. it's almost like British children's panto. humorous because of the bad acting. it's definitely not on the par of, let's say, a mary kate and ashley olsen production, but i think the effort put into it definitely came across. there's enough to keep the audience entertained, and for a local project it was definitely good for the whole community that got involved. i think those that think this is the worst film ever made need to see "angry red planet."
