Elvis Presley‘s “Don’t Be Cruel” remains one of his most beloved tracks. A classic rock band put their own spin on the track in the 1980s. Subsequently, the same band had a hit covering “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
Deciding to cover Elvis Presley’s ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ was ‘torture’ for Cheap Trick
Cheap Trick had a huge hit with their 1988 power ballad “The Flame,” a song that wasn’t written by any of the members of the group. During a 2023 interview with Songfacts, Cheap Trick’s Ben E. Carlos said the band wanted their follow-up single to be a cover. “I literally went through piles of tapes with Richie [Nielsen] from publishers, went through hundreds of songs,” he recalled. “We’d sit there in a room with a ghetto blaster, put a tape in, get about 10 seconds in, and usually just pop the tape out and pitch it in the circular file.

Earlier this spring, TBS announced that it had ordered a new season of The Joe Schmo Show, the format in which a single ordinary person found themselves in the middle of what they thought was an unscripted series, only to eventually discover that everybody around them was actually a comedian attempting to bamboozle that one Joe Schmo.
On one hand, it was a somewhat unlikely resurrection for the quirky reality-comedy hybrid, which originally debuted on Spike TV — remember Spike TV? — back in 2003, aired a second season in 2004, went into hibernation until a third season in 2013, and then returned to sleep for another decade.
On the other hand, bringing back The Joe Schmo Show became an oddly obvious choice after a year in which the lines between scripted comedy and reality became more blurry than ever before, or at least more blurry than any point since that mid-’00s moment when...

Reality television hoax series The Joe Schmo Show is getting new life 20 years after it initially debuted, but it will be without the main face of its original version.
Created by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who would go on to pen Zombieland and the Deadpool franchise, the series launched on Spike in September 2003. Similar to Freevee’s recent show Jury Duty, which starred James Marsden, Joe Schmo featured a cast of actors pretending to be part of a reality competition series, with only one person not in on the joke and actually striving to collect the prize.
Over the three initial seasons, the one constant presence was that of Ralph Garman, a comedian and actor (his credits include Ted and voice work on Family Guy) who currently leads the podcast The Ralph Report and co-hosts Hollywood Babble-On with Kevin Smith. Garman led the proceedings in all three seasons of Schmo,...

The Writers Guild of America picket line outside the Warner Bros. “What you’re about to see is not exactly the show we expected to do today,” Wbd ad sales chief Jon Steinlauf said to open the show. “We made the decision to only have executives on stage out of respect for our talent, and the WGA.”
Instead, Steinlauf, EVP of Advertising Sales and Inclusive Solutions, Sheereen Russell; CNN CEO Chris Licht; Wbd Sports chief Luis Silberwasser; US networks content chief Kathleen Finch; streaming and games head Jb Perrette; HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys; and chief revenue officer Bruce Campbell addressed a tired crowd of media buyers,...

TBS is reviving The Joe Schmo Show, breathing new life into the reality prank series which aired its third season 10 years ago on Spike. The show’s revival was announced by Kathleen Finch during the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Wednesday, May 17. The latest season of the series will be hosted by Cat Deeley, who is best known for So You Think You Can Dance. Season 4 of The Joe Schmo Show will follow another show within a show, taking aim at the absurdity of reality TV by making a regular guy believe he is competing on a reality show, when he’s actually being pranked in an elaborate scheme. Surrounded by a cast of highly skilled improv comedians, the unsuspecting individual’s reactions to their behaviors is where the comedy of it all comes from. The Joe Schmo Show is back… and more clueless than ever.

In the new version, an unsuspecting guy named Ben thinks he’s a contestant on a new reality series called The Goat, while every other contestant is actually an improv comedian pretending to be a reality TV contestant. As Amazon Freevee’s hoax reality series “Jury Duty” is currently garnering huge amounts of attention, the format originator is staging a comeback. TBS is set to announce Wednesday that it has ordered a revival of “The Joe Schmo Show,” which will air next year on the cabler.
The original “Joe Schmo” premiered in 2003 on Spike TV, with a follow-up in 2004 and then a third season revival in 2013. Created by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, “Joe Schmo” made waves when it first debuted for parodying the then-relatively new and white-hot reality competition genre.
The new “Joe Schmo” will be hosted by Cat Deeley (“So You Think You Can Dance”) and once again center on a show-within-a-show in which one non-acting civilian thinks he’s competing on a reality series — when he’s actually in a scripted environment surrounded by improv comedians.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced as part of its upfronts Wednesday that a reboot order of “The Joe Schmo Show” is a go at TBS for 2024. Watch the first teaser trailer above.
Reality TV has come a long way since 2003 when the original “Joe Schmo Show” was watched by more than 44 million viewers. Now to be hosted by five-time Emmy Award nominee Cat Deeley, the 20-year reboot’s show within a show will take aim at the absurdity of reality TV by making a regular guy believe he is competing on a reality show, when he is, in fact, surrounded by a cast of highly skilled improv comedians.

If you haven’t discovered the eight-part genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” that started streaming April 7 on Amazon’s free streaming service Freevee, it’s time that you did. It’s been described as the world’s first feelgood prank show, and it’s all of that and more. Here the elevator pitch: “The Office” meets “The Truman Show.” Here’s the premise: A guy answers a Craigslist add looking for someone to participate in a filmed documentary about serving on a jury. What they don’t mention is that they would essentially be unwittingly performing in a sitcom that the person didn’t know was a sitcom and that everyone surrounding them – and we do mean everyone – was an actor.
That unsuspecting dupe happens to be a good-natured, game-for-anything young man named Ronald Gladden, and through the eight episodes of “Jury Duty” we follows his selection onto the purported jury...

Who would have guessed that The Joe Schmo Show, a series that aired three seasons on the since-renamed Spike network scattered between 2003 and 2013, would be TV’s most influential format of 2022 and 2023? Other than fans of The Joe Schmo Show, I mean.
That series, in which an ordinary civilian — a “Joe Schmo,” if you will — is pranked/hoaxed/conned/scammed into believing he was part of a reality show when he was actually surrounded by a crew of actors, has its potent DNA in Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal, one of my favorite shows of last year, and Peacock’s Paul T. Goldman, a provocatively noxious offering from earlier this winter. Now it’s back again in Freevee’s Jury Duty.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith started his career by making a movie with his friends, and honestly, nothing's really changed. The prolific writer and director recently released his goodbye to the View Askewniverse, "Clerks III," and pulled out all of the stops bringing his famous (and not-so-famous) friends together for one last hurrah.
There are so many cameos in "Clerks III" that it's almost difficult to determine what's a cameo and what's simply someone reprising a role from one of the other Askewniverse films, but that's honestly part of the fun. After all, this is a universe where there are at least five different men walking around looking and sounding like Ben Affleck, including a brand new one introduced in "Clerks III."
Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) are back, of course, along with a few other View Askewniverse favorites that actually have too much screen-time to be "cameos," but there...

truTV, which recently rebranded itself to focus more on comedy and less on fakery, has announced that it's ordered a new prank show executive produced by David Spade. This isn't another hidden camera series, however. Instead, "Fameless" will make its cameras very visible. It's a series that the network describes as "half sketch show/half prank show," one that "will take a lighthearted look at how far people will go to be famous." What that means is this: a group of actors and improvisers will create a fake show, like an SNL sketch, but then play it out with a real person as one of the contestants. David Spade, who's also going to be in the return of "Joe Dirt" this summer, will appear at least once in the series, which is produced by Electus. If this sounds familiar, that's probably because it sounds a lot like "The Joe Schmo Show,...

Since breaking out on "Saturday Night Live," Kristen Wiig has been lighting up the comedy scene and paving the way for female entertainers.
After realizing that acting was her passion, the art student dropped everything and headed out to Los Angeles to make her dreams a reality. While success was hardly immediate for Wiig, her hall of fame "SNL" career and breakout film role in "Bridesmaids" (2011) have made her one of the biggest comedy actresses today. This fall, Wiig taps into her dramatic side in the indie favorite "The Skeleton Twins" opposite fellow "SNL" alum, Bill Hader.
From her days selling hot dogs to her big-screen debut, here are 23 things you probably don't know about Kristen Wiig.
1. Kristen Wiig was born August 22, 1973 in Canadaigua, New York to Laurie J. Johnston and Jon J. Wiig.
2. Her mother was an artist, while her father ran a lake marina in Western New York.

"Zombieland" co-writer/executive producer Rhett Reese took to Twitter to vent a bit upon hearing the news that Amazon will not be moving forward with the series. While reviews were definitely mixed, he seemed to place the blame on fans of the film who refused to embrace the concept.

I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence.

Amazon.com released a Zombieland pilot episode over their instant video service last month, but it has been revealed that they will not move forward with an order of additional episodes. The pilot was released along with a number of original pilots in April, but reaction to the episode was less than positive from many of those who had seen it.
While this is likely the end for Zombieland: The Series, it is possible that another company could pick up the show. If we hear anything else about the project moving forward, we’ll be sure to let readers know. If you’d like a preview of the pilot, we’ve included the official trailer below. AmazonStudios is taking a more unusual approach by letting viewers decide what they want to keep watching. The company has kicked off its screening process this weekend by unveiling its inaugural slate of 14 pilots — eight comedies and six kids shows, all made available for free on AmazonInstant Video, LoveFilm UK and LoveFilm Germany. Viewers are being invited to watch the pilots and Amazon is welcoming feedback from its audience. According to Deadline, the company will evaluate feedback from an online panel recruited on Amazon preview as well as traditional offline focus groups to decide if they greenlight a series or not. The highest-profile series is Zombieland, but the two that look most interesting are Alpha House, starring John Goodman with cameos by Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert; and Onion News Empire. Amazon has not yet decided how many of the shows will make the cut, nor when they will premiere.
