More casting out of Cannes today. A lead has been set for the long-gestating sci-fi thriller The Raven, as Heat Vision reports that Gerard Butler is now in talks to star. Universal acquired the project in 2010 based off a short film directed by Ricardo de Montreuil. The story of the short focuses on a young man with powers who is being chased around downtown Los Angeles by robotic police drones. The feature film is described as a conspiracy thriller set in the future, and Gold Circle has come onboard to co-finance alongside Universal Pictures. Liam Hemsworth was previously in talks for the lead role, but it appears that Butler will now be toplining the pic following his action turn in Olympus Has Fallen. De Montreuil is still onboard to direct, and with a star and financing coming together, The Raven might start production as early as this year. Hit the »

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is probably mentioned once every five seconds somewhere in the world. Guardians Of The Galaxy is one element of that world under scrutiny as of late. Indeed, ’tis the season for the maestros of Marvel to reveal details, confirm future films and deny rumours. Marvel’s Kevin Feige sat down with EW this last week to set the record straight and dish out the official dirt on the future of their universe. What they probably didn’t have in mind was one of the stars twinkling in their sky to hop on Twitter to do it himself.
English actor, Enzo Cilenti, known for his small roles in Next, The Rum Diary and the upcoming Kick-Ass 2 has let the cat (or raccoon) out of the bag. Yesterday he announced on Twitter:
I may or may not be in #Guardiansofthegalaxy. I am sworn to secrecy so can’t say. »

"I'm very competitive," Aaron Eckhart tells me. "Being centre stage gives me more to do, and I do like to be in control, so that helps."
Aaron Eckhart knows of what he speaks. The American actor is best known for his key role as Harvey Dent in Christopher Nolan's blockbusting 'The Dark Knight', but this this sits atop a robust career catalogue of interesting indie stuff - ever since he caught audience eyes as Sam in 'Erin Brokovich', including the grief-ridden 'Rabbit Hole' with Nicole Kidman, and most recently in Johnny Depp's ode to Hunter S Thompson, 'The Rum Diary'.
"It's a dance that you try to get right," Eckhart explains of his screen choices.. "I'll always be interested in doing films like 'Rabbit Hole'. 'The Rum Diary' was a bit broader but, in this business, if you have any sense of self-preservation, »

Dead Man Dies the Death: Farrell and 2013 have another major box-office bomb Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, best known for the Swedish-made blockbuster The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and starring Colin Farrell, whose box-office clout has diminished quite a bit in recent years following a whole string of box-office disappointments or downright disasters, the revenge thriller Dead Man Down has been turned into the most recent 2013 box-office disaster. The R-rated film, which also stars the Swedish film's Dragon-Tattooed girl, Noomi Rapace, opened with an embarrassing $5.35 million at 2,188 site, averaging a measly $2,445 per location as per studio (FilmDistrict) estimates found on the web site Box Office Mojo. (Pictured above: Colin Farrell holds his ground next to Noomi Rapace in Dead Man Down.) Expect the latest disappointing FilmDistrict release to vanish from Us and Canadian screens in the next couple of weeks; indeed, Farrell's action flick will be extremely lucky if »

Oz The Great and Powerful was positioned as the first major blockbuster of 2013, and its opening weekend didn't disappoint. The fantasy prequel scored $79.1 million, which is by-far the highest debut so far in 2013. Meanwhile, Dead Man Down became the latest violent R-rated movie to die a quick death. The Top 12 earned $128.3 million, which is up six percent from the same frame last year when John Carter was the top opener at just over $30 million. Oz's $79.1 million from 3,912 locations is over twice as high as Identity Thief's $34.6 million, and is the strongest debut since The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey started off with $84.6 million in December. It's also the third-highest opening ever for March, and the fifth-highest ever during the pre-Summer months. The movie's opening looks very strong against nearly all comparable titles aside from its most similar movie, Alice in Wonderland, whose overwhelming box office success clearly incentivized Disney to move forward with Oz. »

Box office comparisons between the current and the previous Die Hard movies [See previous post: "Is the latest Willis / Die Hard movie a domestic box-office hit or a flop?"] However, when compared to the previous four movies in the franchise, the latest entry is nothing but a box-office disappointment -- though, I should add, it's the first movie in the franchise not to open in late spring/summer. (Pictured above: Willis as the invincible hero John McClane in A Good Day to Die Hard.) Directed by John McTiernan (who's currently facing a potential one-year prison sentence for lying to the FBI during the Anthony Pellicano wiretapping investigation several years ago), the original Die Hard movie released in 1988 scored $7.5 million (approximately $14 million today) at 1,276 theaters on its first weekend in wide release, July 22-24. The movie eventually cumed with $83 million (approximately $162.5 million today) in the United States and Canada. Director Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990) grossed $21.74m (approx. $41m today) at 2,507 venues on its opening »

Sigh. Oh, Johnny. You’ve been very trying of late. First a less than stellar turn in Dark Shadows, next a questionable role in The Lone Ranger. And you were once the most interesting actor in Hollywood too. Well, maybe breaking away from Burton and Gore Verbinski for a little while will bring Mr. Depp back into the ‘hey, he’s actually a good actor’ fold as today, we have word that Depp has been attached to the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass.
Johnny Depp will be taking on the role of the notorious Bulger himself in the film. Bulger was a South Boston criminal who inspired the Jack Nicholson character in The Departed. The film is based on the book of the same name by Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerald O’Neill. It follows the life of Bulger, the brother of a state senator, who turned FBI »

Johnny Depp's connection to legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson isn't exactly a secret. In addition to starring in two films based on the writer's works - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary - the actor also served as a narrator for the Alex Gibney documentary Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, wrote the introduction for the oral biography "Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson," and financed the extravagant funeral that was held following the writer's suicide in 2005. But soon Depp's ties to the world of Thompson will grow even deeper as Sony Pictures Classics has announced they have acquired the rights to the new documentary For No Good Reason, which features the Academy Award nominated actor observing the work of the writer's equally legendary illustrator Ralph Steadman. Directed by Charlie Paul, the new documentary was made over the course of »
