NEW YORK -- American Vantage Media Corp.'s indie distribution banner Wellspring has snapped up North American rights to the feature Nina's Tragedies, by helmer Savi Gabizons. The project was Israel's official Oscar submission last year. Nina's-- which had its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, as part of the world cinema section -- centers on a turbulent year in the life of a family living in modern day Tel-Aviv, seen through the eyes of a teenage boy who is smitten with his captivating aunt. Wellsping is planning a theatrical release early next year. The indie shingle has been on a buying spree lately: It sealed a deal over the weekend to acquire another Sundance title, director Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation. (HR 4/12) The Nina's pact was brokered by Wellspring acquisitions head Marie Therese Guirgis, and acquisitions manager Rob Williams. The film was repped by producer Anat Assoulin and Gabizon, who also produced and penned the screenplay. »
