Amores Perros- Desi Version, 12 May 2005
Author: madeleinewarhol from United States

If you have seen Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Amores Perros (2000) then within the first 7 minutes of Aydha Ezhuthu you will know the structure of the story. One chance encounter that changes the lives of

three unknown characters ( marked evidently by a difference in class and ideals)is common to both films. However, unlike Inarritu's film, Ratnam keeps the story tight and less digressive, which is why Amores Perros is longer than the Indian version. I agree with the previous reviews that Madhavan steals the show in the film, unlike his previous sappy performances, unleashing gritty force yet inviting audience sympathy. There is something to be said about the collaboration between A R Rahman and Mani Ratnam though. Each time a political issue either deliberately or inadvertently becomes the topic of Ratnam's films, it reaches a point where it fails to find a practical solution. At this difficult moment , Rahman's music glides in, romantically diluting the entire gravity of the situation on screen. And hence the political idealism of Surya in Ayudha Ezhuthu finds its voice in the 'MTV' inspired beats and rhythms of Rahman's music.
