A Blunt Tamil Copy of Hollywood's 1998 film Sliding Doors!, 19 June 2006

Okay let me first say that this film was shot in the language of Tamil, dubbed into Hindi with English subtitles, so you would probably be thinking that it has to be great in order for them to have gone through all the trouble but honestly, I don't know why they did. Don't get me wrong, it's an okay film. I just wish it weren't such a poor a copy of another film. And you thought that plagiarism was only limited to Bollywood.

Anyways, the film begins with a young man named Shakthi leaving his house one morning en route a job interview, when he spots a beautiful girl walking down the street and he's both attracted to and distracted by her. He begins to follow her and in the process, accidentally misses his bus and is mugged. The film then pauses at this point as a voice over begins to tell the viewer that we are about to examine how Shakthi's life will be impacted by the him that misses the bus, and the him that makes the bus.

The Shakthi who makes the bus, gets to the job interview on time and gets the job of a bank manager, with whom a beautiful young co-worker falls in love with. The catch there is that, this Shakthi is still in love with the same woman his self who missed the bus loves, but try as he may, something keeps preventing him from getting to her. That thing turns out to be the Doppelganger of himself (that is the him who missed the bus). He is well off in life but miserable because he can't get the girl he loves.

The Shakthi who missed the bus, arrives at the interview too late and is thrown out of the bank. On his way back home, he passes by a junkyard where he spots an old friend who gives him a job as a mechanic and life goes on. The next day, while crossing the street, he spots the dream girl from the day before and begins to follow her again until he is able to get her attention and they begin a relationship. One day, the girl's uncle (played by Suneil Shetty) comes to visit and it turns out he too is in love with her and wants to marry her, but the girl is so much in love with Shakthi and vice versa.

In a film whereby three separate men are in love with one woman, you just know that things can't end well. The songs are weird but quite catchy and the costumes are just passable. Blink and you'll miss Suneil Shetty who is probably the only reason why you wanted to see this film in the first place.

There was one scene of nudity that really bothered me because it seemed like something that the editors missed. During a song number, Shetty's character daydreams about a bathing bride (played by Jotika) and when she gets up to leave the bathtub, her top slips down revealing her bare breasts for a split second. I have never seen such a thing in even the more popular Hindi films, so maybe Tamil films are different and more artsy like that? Or was it something the editors missed? I dunno, but just thought I might add that note in.
