A new low point for Aussie films, 11 May 2005
1/10

I like lowbrow movies. Quality lowbrow movies, that is. Dumb & Dumber, Zoolander, There's Something About Mary, Hot Shots, Naked Gun etc all find a place in my DVD collection. But this film, which seems aimed at fans of that genre, is just complete rubbish. It fails on almost every level. As a comedy, it simply isn't funny. At all. The two "heroes" are not particularly likable. Just a couple of dumb dole bludgers. The main problem they face: their favourite soapie gets cancelled. Yep, that's the entire premise of the film. Now, lowbrow films can get by with a thin plot if it's just an excuse for loads of funny set pieces and sight gags. This film has virtually none of either. I find it hard to believe the high praise lavished on You And Your Stupid Mate in a previous review wasn't written by someone directly involved in the production, as this film has copped a bagging from every critic I've seen. And rightly so. It is the worst Australian film I think I've seen, eclipsing even Dear Claudia. Perhaps the only (unintentionally) funny thing in it is the "performance" of Rachel Hunter as some sort of mystical caravan park earth mother. Her accent swings from Kiwi to almost Australian and then touches of California. Avoid this like the plague.

what a ripoff, 17 September 2005

The Australian film industry can surely be a hit and miss affair. There have been some rippers, but this ain't one of them. Everything pertaining to this film is embarrassing, particularly the knowledge that my tax went into paying for it. Everything from the comedy...or lack there of, the attempted sentimentality and the redemptive themes only added to make this film a failure from opening to closing credits.

Its a shame that this isn't even in the class of awful that would make it legendary for its awfulness. Its just an embarrassment. I hope William McInnes and Rachel Hunter were only in it for the money, cause it didn't do their reputations any favours.

Final comment: don't bother. Spend the money on fish and chips instead.

Looks good, but is honestly CRAP, 27 September 2005

This has a couple of "laugh out loud" moments, but it really is a bad movie. It being an Australian movie, i tried to be a loss let critical.

Badly cast..Nathan Philip's was unbelievable and unfunny.Angus Sampson was OK, but not that funny either. It looked like it had a reasonable budget, for an Aussie flick, but it was majorly wasted into a lame script that tried WAY too hard.

It is one of those movies where you say at the end of it "well that was sh*t." It was almost as bad as "The Extra" and It made "Hating Alison Ashley" look like a masterpiece ( that film actually was better than expected).

Verdict:A complete waste of money and embarrassment to the film industry.

You and Your Stupid Mate might like it, 14 September 2005

You and Your Stupid Mate revolves around Philip and Jeffery who live in an Australian trailer park, which looks a lot nicer than any American trailer park you see in movies. Neither of the two guys work, one spends all his days running a website about "Son's and Surf" a crappily acted soap (think Home and Away without the dream sequences, ghosts, montages and flashbacks that make it so realistic). The other is a scout and is in the Gang Show - which I am positive only happens once a year, still it gets him through life. However, one day everything comes crashing down - The trailer park is going to be demolished, they have to work for the dole, and "Sons and Surf" is getting cancelled. What follows is rather predictable - will they save the show? Will one hook up with Rachel Hunter their "fertile" neighbour? What about the work for the dole scheme? Goodness! So many issues to sort. There were some very funny moments - one in the opening sequence involving wees and a pool. The soap episodes are also quite amusing (on the DVD you can watch the episode clips all together). The clothes the guys wear are also hilarious - especially when they go clubbing. Quite a funny film, one that I wouldn't have chosen myself (mainly because Australian comedy tends to get tossed into the same "unfunny" boat as NZ comedy but there are, of course, exceptions).

This is a light-hearted film about two Australian dole-bludgers set to save their favourite TV soap from being axed., 18 February 2007

Firstly, Nathan Phillips and Angus Sampson did a fantastic job-acting wise. They did the best with what lines they were given and honestly made viewers believe they were dole bludgers. While I admit the lame take on Home and Away was a little silly and the writers could have spent just a bit more time coming up with something more creative to motivate the pair of characters I hardly think this movie was made to win an international award. This movie is really very funny and anyone looking for a bit of a laugh will thoroughly enjoy it, it's just another Australian comedy that most of us can have a good time watching. Any fanatical movie critics can keep their far-fetched personally insulting opinions to themselves because this type of movie is truly unique to our country ans sense of humour and I believe it has helped to promote the Australian Film Industry greatly.

Great for a rental laugh., 19 September 2005

The first half hour of the film is a riot!, and then it runs out of idea's and resorts to 101 recycled American comedy cliques. Even though some would say it's a waste of Australian's taxpayer's money, it's only half a waste. Also what was the story with the history lesson on Ned Kelly? Do i suspect this is an poor attempt on selling this overseas? Haven't previous Aussie film makers realized that anyone outside of Australia doesn't really give a toss about Ned Kelly?

All round it's OK for a half baked attempt at comedy and for a DVD rental it's worth catching! The DVD commentary is also a riot. It's as if the director is commentating on a Academy Award masterpiece, was he seriously watching what we where?

You and your stupid Film, 10 July 2005
1/10
Author: PeterZZ from Australia

It's a shameful fact, but this is an Australian film. It has stained any chance that Australia ever had to become a country known for making good films. This is actually a really big shame, as Australia has made some excellent films in the past, and although it wouldn't be able to match up to films such as Getting' Square, the writers of this film could have at least made an effort instead of the garbage put before the Austrlain public.

If it can be called a story, You and your Stupid Mate is a story about two brain dead friends, sharing what is a combination of a caravan and a tent. They spend their dole bludging days watching a home and away like TV series. However their boring little lives are destroyed once they find out that the network plans to axe the show. It's at this point they decide to make it their mission to save the show and will go to any lengths to do so.

So goodbye to the Australain Film industry. The writers of this film should hang out at funerals more often, because maybe then they can get some funnier material than what they managed to come up with. If a dead man was propped up on a stick, he could have done a better acting job then Nathan Phillips and Angus Sampson. The plot was about as riveting as a plain bread sandwich and the only thing that any members of the Austrlain film industry can hope for is that once something hits the bottom, things can only go upwards.

Tight, charming Aussie comedy, 2 May 2005
7/10
Author: fertilecelluloid from Mountains of Madness

This is one of the freshest, most unpretentious, least self-conscious Australian features of recent memory. It is a lowbrow comedy aimed directly at teenage boys -- that said, its inherent charm also makes it a shrewd bet for any age.

Though the opening flashback of our two "heroes" (Jeffrey and Philip as kids) falls a little flat, the strong script (by Dave O'Neil and Mark O'Toole) and uncluttered direction ( by Marc Gracie) combine to birth a very likable comedy.

Though YOU AND YOUR STUPID MATE is spawned from the genre that gave us DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR, ROAD TRIP and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, it is a far less cynical piece than those movies and is populated by characters you might have found in a Bill Forsyth film (from the early 80's) such as GREGORY'S GIRL, THAT SINKING FEELING and LOCAL HERO, or the underrated Aussie gem FAST TALKING.

Though the film's trailer promises a movie about the adventures of two obnoxious slackers, the lead characters (played sweetly by Nathan Philips and Angus Sampson) are, in fact, charming innocents, who learn a valuable lesson in friendship.

Where MATE shines is in its casting and supporting character roster. William McInnes is superb as the disaffected boss of a government employment agency who endures terrible flashbacks of being mocked by scouts. Rachel Hunter is simply gorgeous as a woman (with five cute daughters) who lives in the same trailer park as Jeffrey and Philip. In one magical scene, one of the boys looks lovingly at her and declares: "Wow, she's so fertile." The reference to "Sailing", a song sung by Rachel's ex- (Rod Stewart), is inspired, too.

STUPID MATE is stuffed with charming asides like this and also boasts a few surreal cinematic detours into characters' pasts; one sequence, set in Somalia, is very funny; also worth a mention is a sequence in which Evo, a soap hunk (played by Tayler Kane), flashes back to a lifetime of fans taking the mickey out of his on-screen character.

All is resolved in a fashion consistent with the film's tone and general sense of innocence.

A very fine effort.
