Fifty-four new college graduates — all of whom are youth in the foster system — received a surprise gift in late May. At a graduation celebration thrown by Ready to Succeed, an L.A.-based nonprofit that worked with each student throughout their college journey, each matriculating student got a $2,000 graduation gift, money that will help them reach their next goal in life.
“They have all overcome tremendous odds to get this far,” says Romi Lassally, the co-founder and co-executive director of the Hollywood-loved nonprofit Ready to Succeed. Those odds are highlighted in a sobering statistic: Only 4 percent of youth who age out of the foster system in Los Angeles County get a college degree.
By contrast, scholars in Ready to Succeed’s wrap-around career and personal development program have a remarkable success rate: Ninety percent graduate college in 4.5 years and 89 percent find “strong entry-level jobs in fields they want to work...

Something as small as a $10 surcharge is apparently enough to set Chris Brown off.
On Wednesday night at Los Angeles' Pinz bowling alley, Brown exploded on a parking attendant over a $10 valet charge, according to TMZ. The 23-year-old, who had been at the venue for a charity event, was furious he had to pay the fee.
"F*ck ten dollars," the singer said, TMZ reported. He was allegedly angry because he had only been inside for 30 minutes and didn't think he should pay. After threatening to "turn this whole thing on out," he got his keys and drove away. It is unclear whether he paid the $10 or not.
According to Pinz's Facebook page, the bowling alley was hosting a "Stars and Strikes" celebrity bowling and poker event on behalf of the youth-centered charity, A Place Called Home. The Wanted, Pete Wentz, Patrick Stump, Nick Cannon and will.i.am were...

Maria Shriver must have had one hell of a week, though based on appearances, you'd never know it.
Late Monday night, news broke that estranged husband Arnold Schwarzenneger had fathered a child with a former member of the couple's household staff.
The next day, Shriver showed no outward signs of turmoil when she showed up at Chicago's United Center to support good friend Oprah Winfrey as a guest at the talk show queen's farewell show.
Looking radiant in a sparkly blue dress, Shriver told Winfrey: "You have given me love, support, wisdom and most of all, the truth."
More details that surfaced that same evening about Schwarzenegger's alleged infidelities--specifically, that the woman was Mildred Patricia Baena, who had worked as a housekeeper for the Schwarzenegger family for 20 years before leaving in January--didn't seem to get in the way of her plans, either.
Back home in Los Angeles two days later--on...

Arnold Schwarzenegger's estranged wife Maria Shriver and their eldest daughter Katherine put on a united front on Thursday as the young author was honoured at a female empowerment gala.
Heartbroken Shriver has put on a brave face in the media this week (begs16May11) after the actor-turned-politician confessed to fathering a child with a member of their household staff more than 10 years ago.
The former First Lady of California made her first public appearance on Tuesday, hours after the shocking revelation, as she joined Oprah Winfrey onstage in Chicago, Illinois for the TV mogul's farewell talk show special.
Shriver was all smiles again as she celebrated her daughter's Girl Power Award win at the Women Who Inspire Us luncheon, organised by bosses at A Place Called Home, a non-profit youth centre in South Central Los Angeles. They were joined at the event by Katherine's 19-year-old sister, Christina.
The mother-of-four took to her Twitter.com blog to praise 21-year-old Katherine, who was honoured for being an inspiration to young women.
Shriver wrote, "Congrats to my beautiful & brilliant daughter, (Katherine), for receiving the GirlPower Award from A Place Called Home today."
The accolade came on the same day disgraced Terminator star Schwarzenegger announced he was putting his film comeback on hold to concentrate on his personal life.

Why is Nancy O'Dell appearing in yet another "Scream" movie? Does she enjoy torturing herself? The gorgeous entertainment journalist confessed to me that she is absolutely terrified by horror movies and can only watch them with her eyes covered. So what gives?
"The irony of being a part of three "Scream" movies is I'm one of those people who sits in scary movies with her hands over her eyes," she admits to The Dish Rag. "But the best thing about the "Scream" movies is they add humor, which means I can actually watch the scenes I'm in."
"Scream 4" opens in March 2011. We can't wait to see how much of it she'll be able to watch.
In the meantime, Nancy is preparing to co-host Own's (Oprah Winfrey's Network) series called "Your Own Show: Oprah's Search for the Next TV Star."

Shailene Woodley, best recognized as the star of The Secret Life of the American Teenager (TV), was born on November 15, 1991, in Simi Valley, California, to Loni and Lorry Woodley, who are now divorced. She's the older sister to a brother, Tanner. Woodley more or less stumbled into acting, as she wound up with her cousin, a model, at a talent call. Asked by her mother if she wanted to try acting, Woodley -- who's called "Shai" by her family and friends -- said yes and has been pursuing the craft ever since. Did we mention that she was five at the time? And it wasn't long after that that Woodley was appearing in televison commercials and acting in shows and movies. "My friends went to soccer practice; I went to auditions," Woodley said during a 2008 conference call with reporters. "So I've never really thought of it as a job or...

Ann-Margret has hopped into Taxi for 20th Century Fox and helmer Tim Story. The actress is set to play the mother of Jimmy Fallon's character, joining Fallon, Queen Latifah, Gisele Bundchen, Jennifer Esposito, Christian Kane, Henry Simmons and Ana Cristina De Oliceira in the project, which is shooting. Taxi is being produced by Luc Besson and Bob Simonds. It centers on Belle (Queen Latifah), the best taxi driver in New York, who reluctantly teams with Washburn (Fallon), the worst driver in the history of the New York Police Department, to bring a Brazilian beauty (Bundchen) and her bank-robbing gang to justice. TCF topper Hutch Parker and vp production Emma Watts are overseeing for the studio. The role marks a busy run for Ann-Margret. She recently finished up the Hallmark movie of the week 'Til the River Runs Dry as well as a three-episode arc on NBC's Third Watch to run in the November sweep. Ann-Margret also has a Christmas album coming out in November titled "Ann-Margret's Christmas Carol Collection." Ann-Margret, a two-time Oscar nominee, is repped by ICM and manager Alan Margulies.
