Interview: Actor Thomas Haden Church is Character Driven in ‘Max’

25 June 2015 9:02 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Thomas Haden Church has the recognizable name, and a long career of character roles in comedy and drama. His laid-back persona gets a bit more intense as a conflicted father in the new film “Max,” about a military dog who comes home to an uncertain future with a grieving family.

What may look like a standard family film is actually an exploration of the mourning and the healing process, and the waste of war. Church is Ray Wincott, an early 1990s “Desert Storm” veteran, who sees his son Kyle (Robbie Arnell) follow in his Marine Corp footsteps to the Afghanistan conflict. One of the Kyle’s duties is to care for Max, a German Shepard who sniffs out bombs in the region. When Kyle is killed in action, Max is sent back to the Wincott family to get over his companion’s demise, but will only respond to Ray’s other son, »

Time Machine: Remember K Stewart's 'Dirty Dancing'? Fabricated Lois Lane Rumors?

Kristen Stewart 'On the Road' dancing, with Garrett Hedlund on the right Down memory lane: Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart 'On the Road' images At the time best known as The Twilight Saga's conflicted human Bella Swan, Kristen Stewart was cast as the exuberant Marylou in Walter Salles' film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's iconic 1950s novel On the Road. Salles had been impressed with Stewart's pre-Twilight work in Sean Penn's Into the Wild. Based on LuAnne Henderson, Kerouac's close buddy Neal Cassady's first wife, Marylou is described as a "beautiful little sharp chick." Apparently, one who also likes to move seductively to the sound of music – as can be attested by the Kristen Stewart picture above, which first came out online in early 2011. Besides Stewart, On the Road also features Garrett Hedlund – at the time best known for Tron: Legacy – as Dean Moriarty, »

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: Losers on the Road in the Neverland of California Wineries and Neurotic Peter Pan-ish Males

'Sideways' movie, with Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church 'Sideways' movie review: California winery tour follows conventional road to male maturity With the 1999 Matthew Broderick-Reese Witherspoon vehicle Election, Alexander Payne displayed a flair for satirical comedy the likes of which would have turned Billy Wilder greener (with envy) than the Sideways poster found further below in this commentary. With the 2002 Jack Nicholson star vehicle About Schmidt, Payne demonstrated that his comedic flair could go the way of Wilder's in fluff like Sabrina and Love in the Afternoon: artificial, cutesy, bland.* In Sideways, Payne opted for the safer About Schmidt route – which may explain the film's enormous popularity with critics and audiences alike. For my part, I found his adaptation (with Jim Taylor) of Rex Pickett's novel to be an overlong, moralistic, and thoroughly unconvincing effort. New trailer for Love and Mercy starring John Cusack and Paul Dano as The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson

15 April 2015 1:59 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

A new trailer for Love and Mercy – which tells the story of The Beach BoysBrian Wilson – has arrived online, and we have it for you below…

Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) and John Cusack (High Fidelity) both star as Wilson, playing him as a young and old man respectively. The film follows Wilson from the group’s rise in sunny SoCal through the darkness of his burgeoning mental illness. As their popularity soared — making magic in the studio, conquering charts and minds, battling the Beatles (and sometimes winning) — Wilson’s inner demons festered.

The film focuses mainly on Wilson in the 1980’s, when he suffered midlife crisis that could have killed him, to the midlife romance that pretty much saved him. Paul Giamatti (Sideways) co-stars as Eugene Landy, the dodgy shrink who went from helping Wilson to over-medicating him, alongside Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) as Melinda Ledbetter, »

Sideways Director Alexander Payne May Make A Movie About A 4-Time Lottery Winner

6 April 2015 7:32 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

With films like Sideways, The Descendants, and Nebraska, director Alexander Payne has proven himself a master at deftly balancing comedy and drama in his chosen projects. Now, if all goes according to plan, it looks like he has found yet another vehicle to allow him to do what he does best. That's because he is now in talks to helm a romantic comedy inspired by a true story about a woman who won the Texas State Lottery an impressive four times. The new project is titled Septillion to One, and while Payne is not officially attached just yet, The Wrap says that the film has definitely caught his eye. The script he would be working from is written by Adam R. Perlman and Graham Sack, and described as "a cross between Silver Linings Playbook and Ocean.s 11." The story centers on an ambitious former FBI agent working in the fraud »

Alexander Payne Considers Rolling The Dice On OddLot’s Septillion To One

6 April 2015 5:43 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The script itself prompted a high stakes bidding game – from which OddLot Entertainment emerged victorious – and now, Academy Award winner Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) is considering taking a chance on Septillion To One. Penned by The Newsroom writer Adam R. Perlman and newcomer Graham Sack, the true tale of a mysterious serial lottery winner has sparked the imaginations of several production companies – all keen to get behind OddLot in pushing the project through to production as soon as possible.

Septillion To One is inspired by the real, and suspiciously fortunate activities of Joan Ginther, who won large sums of money playing the lottery in Texas, and also happens to have a PhD in Statistics from Stanford University. Ginther’s first big win came in 1993, when she picked up half a Lotto Texas jackpot, amounting to $5.4 million. She reportedly moved to Las Vegas in 2001, but continued to return to her »

The fevered excitement of a potential zombie apocalypse is a perfect mining ground for an array of entertainment arenas. From TV shows, video games and movies, there’s never been a better time to pronounce your love of those flesh-gobbling undead shufflers than turning to a screen near you. While AMC’s The Walking Dead has commandeered the small screen for several years now, Legendary are hoping to take a swipe at the zombie flagship with their effort, Dead Rising: Watchtower.

Zach Lipovsky’s live-action adaptation showcases its roots in this first full-length trailer, which presents a mix of violent splatter-movie motifs and tongue-in-cheek comedy. In this case, its loyalty isn’t to a novel or comic book, but to the best-selling video game series which has so far shifted over 7.6 million units worldwide.
