Clint Eastwood's Oscars Challenge: Getting Liberal Voters to Love 'American Sniper'

18 November 2014 8:49 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

This story first appeared in the Nov. 28 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Deep into 2004, as the Oscar race was coalescing around just a few pictures, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator looked like the film to beat. It was classy, it was a period piece, it had a roster of top-notch performances, it was directed by America's most acclaimed filmmaker and its subject matter was near and dear to Hollywood's heart: Howard Hughes. Sure, Alexander Payne's Sideways and the biopic Ray looked like they might give it a run for its money. But both were small in scale, unlikely to

Matt Damon to Star in Alexander Payne's Downsizing

9 November 2014 12:00 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Matt Damon has landed an interesting role in Alexander Payne's next film that he calls Downsizing. The movie is described as a social satire in which "a guy realizes he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself." So it looks like we're going to see a little Matt Damon up on the big screen. There aren't any more details on the story at this point, but the little bit I do know has sparked my interest.

Downsizing was scripted by Payne and Jim Taylor.  The two worked together on the Oscar winning screenplay for Sideways. They also wrote the script for the film About Schmidt. I'm a fan of the kind of films that Payne makes, which also includes Election, Descendants, and, most recently, Nebraska

This should be a fun project for Damon, who is also set to star in the Ridley Scott-directed film The Martian. »

Week in Review: Marvel subpoenas Google for ‘Avengers’ trailer leak

8 November 2014 9:11 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Need more proof Marvel controls the world? This week the movie studio even made Google (Google! of all companies) do their bidding when Marvel issued a subpoena to investigate the identity of a Google user named “John Gazelle” who may have been responsible for the low-quality leak of Marvel’s trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron. The subpoena alleges that “John Gazelle” may have uploaded the file to a Google Drive account, and they have now “commanded” Google to “produce at the time, date, and place set forth below the following documents, electronically stored information, or objects, and to permit inspection, copying, testing, or sampling of the material.”

Both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter have copies of the court document. In it it’s clear that while the first request to produce documents was granted by the courts, Marvel was not granted the right to “permit entry onto the designated premises, »

Matt Damon to be shrunk for Alexander Payne's Downsizing

5 November 2014 10:51 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Matt Damon looks like he'll go from Ridley Scott's The Martian to Alexander Payne's new film...

Matt Damon is currently preparing to shoot Ridley Scott's next movie, The Martian, based on the excellent novel by Andy Weir. Beyond that, he's also earmarked to return to the Jason Bourne franchise for a new movie, that will bring him back together with director Paul Greengrass.

In the midst of those, though, he's also set to squeeze in the new project from the brilliant Alexander Payne. Payne has already given the world the likes of Election, Sideways and Nebraska. His next film? That'd be Downsizing, and he's targeting Matt Damon for the lead role.

An interesting lead role too. The description of the film is that it's a 'social satire in which a guy realises he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself'. Which, by the sounds of things, »

Matt Damon Tackles Downsizing

5 November 2014 4:13 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Though he was developing the film in 2009, and even reached the casting stage, Alexander Payne put Downsizing aside to concentrate on The Descendants and Nebraska. It appears he’s finally ready to commit to the high-concept film and has Matt Damon attached to star.Payne wrote the script with Sideways partner Jim Taylor. Though there may have been changes along the way, the plot should still see a man low on money who decides that life would be a lot cheaper and easier if he underwent a procedure to shrink himself. Travelling through life as a tiny person, he meets a girl and a pint-sized foreigner. Paul Giamatti, Reese Witherspoon and Sacha Baron Cohen were attached back in ’09, but this sounds like a new cast in the making. The film will see Payne dabbling in effects technology to a greater extent than ever before, with green screen and other tricks »

Alexander Payne's 'Downsizing' Finally Moving Forward with Matt Damon

5 November 2014 1:20 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Back in 2009, Alexander Payne was close to beginning work on a movie titled Downsizing with Paul Giamatti, Reese Witherspoon and Sacha Baron Cohen starring. Obviously that never came to be as Payne went on to direct The Descendents and then Nebraska, but he's finally coming back to the film which he wrote with his Sideways and About Schmidt co-writer Jim Taylor with Matt Damon set to star. Described as a social satire, the film tells the story of a man and his wife who decide their lives have gotten out of hand, and would be better should they have themselves shrunk down. Unfortunately for the man, his wife backs out at the last minute. There's no word on whether or not the script has changed in the last five years, but Witherspoon was previously attached to play a woman the lead character meets on his journey as a miniature person »

Matt Damon joins Alexander Payne’s high concept sci-fi, 'Downsizing'

5 November 2014 12:46 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Alexander Payne sticks to the real. Even with the biting satire of "Election," "Sideways’" melancholy sitcomisms, and the quirk "Nebraska," his films keep their feet on the ground. But there’s a high-concept side to Payne, a writer capable of penning "Jurassic Park 3" and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry." We’ll see those skills put to good use when his percolating script "Downsizing" finally comes to fruition with one of Hollywood’s most talented leading men. Deadline reports that Matt Damon will star in "Downsizing," a small-scale sci-fi drama co-written with Jim Taylor ("About Schmidt," "Sideways"). In the script’s early days of development, Reese Witherspoon and Paul Giamatti were in talks to star as a financially troubled married couple. Damon will likely take over the latter's part. "Downsizing" has all the makings of Payne’s "Eternal Sunshine" or "her." Previously described by the director as a deranged »

Matt Damon To Star In Alexander Payne’s Long-Gestating Sci-Fi-Ish Geopolitical Comedy ‘Downsizing’

5 November 2014 12:34 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Passion project alert! Ok, so a thousand films are announced at the American Film Market and a lot of them are easy to sneer at or forget about, but this one is exciting. Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing” is coming back to life with Matt Damon in the lead role. Payne had been developing the project since “Sideways," but because of its scale and technological issues—he wasn't wasn’t well-versed in the latter at the time—he shelved it and instead took on “The Descendants” and then “Nebraska.” Deadline, which broke the news, seems to have forgotten the logline, but we read the script ages ago. Below is what we wrote way back when as a kind of synopsis. Essentially, the film is a kind of dystopian satire with geo-political connotations, but much like Payne's work often is, it's personal and intimate.   "Downsizing," after all, starts off in Norway and »

Matt Damon Takes The Lead In Alexander Payne’s Downsizing

5 November 2014 12:32 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The year’s biggest rumour concerning Matt Damon’s future slate was undoubtedly the suggestion that he’d be returning to his career-defining franchise for Bourne 5. While that prospect had fans holding their breath for confirmation, the actor began eyeing up a role in Legendary Pictures’ The Great Wall. Per Deadline, we’ve now learned that Damon will no longer be scaling the infamous wall in Zhang Zimou’s China-based epic, as he’s in the crosshairs for Alexander Payne’s next pic, Downsizing.

As a matter of scheduling conflicts, the Oscar winner has bowed out of the Chinese zombie tale and has opted to board the indie darling’s next project. So far, there’s only a brief hint at what the story entails, but it’s enough to tantalize our cinematic tastebuds:

Matt Damon to Star in Alexander Payne’s Next Film Downsizing

5 November 2014 12:29 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Matt Damon is adding yet another esteemed filmmaker to his incredible resume.  After having worked with Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Paul Greengrass, Anthony Minghella, Steven Soderbergh, Terry Gilliam, The Coen Brothers, etc., Damon is now poised to team up with Alexander Payne on the Nebraska filmmaker’s next project.  Deadline reports that Damon will lead Downsizing, which is described as a social satire and revolves around a guy who “realizes he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself.”  Payne co-wrote the film with his Sideways co-writer Jim Taylor, and the 20th Century Fox picture will be Payne’s next movie.  More after the jump, including what other project this knocks off Damon’s schedule. Further plot details are unknown for Downsizing at this time, but I’m very curious to find out if the aforementioned “shrinking” is literal or figurative—could Payne be making his own Innerspace reboot? »

Matt Damon Joins 'Downsizing' for Director Alexander Payne

5 November 2014 12:03 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Matt Damon has signed on to star in Downsizing for 20th Century Fox and writer-director Alexander Payne.

We first reported on the project back in March 2009, when the filmmaker had actors such as Paul Giamatti, Reese Witherspoon and Sacha Baron Cohen attached to star. The project never moved forward, as the filmmaker went on to direct The Descendants just a few years later.

The story centers on a man (Matt Damon) who comes to the realization that his life would be much better if he shrunk himself. Alexander Payne co-wrote the screenplay with Jim Taylor, who he won an Oscar with for writing Sideways. They also co-wrote the screenplays for Citizen Ruth, Election and About Schmidt, which were all directed by Alexander Payne.

With Matt Damon taking on Downsizing, that puts him out of contention for Legendary's The Great Wall, a project the actor has been circling since September. He »

Matt Damon To Star In Alexander Payne’s ‘Downsizing’

Exclusive: Matt Damon will star in Downsizing, the next film from Alexander Payne. I’m told that Damon will take on this film, which is set at 2oth Century Fox, and that it knocks him out of the China-set Legendary Pictures epic The Great Wall, which will be helmed by Zhang Yimou. Downsizing was scripted by Payne with Jim Taylor, with whom Payne shared the adapted screenplay Oscar for Sideways. They are partners in Ad Hominem Enterprises, and their scripting collaborations also include About Schmidt.

Details on this project aren’t plentiful, but here’s a logline: Pic is a social satire in which a guy realizes he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself. Payne most recently directed the superb Nebraska.
