‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Taps Composer Geoff Zanelli

16 August 2016 11:50 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney’s upcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will be the first film in the “Pirates” franchise not to feature composer Hans Zimmer. Yet the fifth entry will nonetheless stay within the same musical family, tapping Geoff Zanelli, one of Zimmer’s longtime protégés, to take over.

Zanelli’s composer credits include HBOs “The Pacific” and TNT’s “Into the West” (for which he won an Emmy), as well as “No Stranger Than Love,” “Mortdecai” and his breakout score for 2012’s “The Odd Life of Timothy Green.” As part of Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions, Zanelli composed themes for several of Zimmer’s previous “Pirates” scores, most notably “On Stranger Tides” in 2011.

“What Hans did for the ‘Pirates’ movies redefined the sound of the entire genre,” Zanelli says. “It has been very fulfilling to work alongside him and [producer] Jerry [Bruckheimer] on the past four films. ‘Dead Men »

How ‘Mr. Robot’ Star Rami Malek Used Anxiety to Carry His Breakthrough Emmys Drama

8 August 2016 3:17 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Rami Malek is in Emmy mode.

The “Mr. Robot” star just flew back to the States from London for a fitting with a stylist, an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and a visit to the Television Critics Association Awards (where his USA Network series was named best new series).

What’s more, he’s got a new movie to prep: Malek will play the Dustin Hoffman role in a reworking of John Frankenheimer’s 1974 prison-break classic, “Papillon.”

This actor doesn’t agree to do just anything – he sets sky-high standards for himself. That’s how Malek broke through the noise on Sam Esmail’s innovative paranoid psycho-thriller “Mr. Robot.” The drama seemed to come out of nowhere, but quickly collected so many nominations and awards (Golden Globes Best Drama Series, Peabody, Critics Choice, AFI Ten Best TV, Gotham Breakthrough) that six Emmy nominations seemed inevitable.

National Geographic Channel has acquired the worldwide rights to an untitled climate change feature documentary produced by Fisher Stevens and Leonardo DiCaprio, the cable network announced at their Television Critics Association summer press tour panel Saturday. NatGeo plans to release the film theatrically in New York and Los Angeles in October, followed by a global premiere on National Geographic Channels worldwide preceding the U.S. election in November.

The film presents an account of how society can prevent the demise of endangered species, ecosystems and native communities across the globe. Audiences are presented with visual evidence of a worsening environmental crisis that is inflicting irreversible damage on landscapes from Greenland to Indonesia, disturbing the balance of our planet’s climate and hastening the extinction of beloved animals. DiCaprio interviews individuals from every facet of society in both developing and developed nations who provide their views on what must be done today – and in the future – to transition »

Review: 'The Night Of' gets off to a breathless start with 'The Beach'

10 July 2016 7:25 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Earlier this week, I published my rave review of HBO's new miniseries The Night Of, and I'm going to put it into the weekly review rotation for its run, starting with thoughts on the first episode, coming up just as soon as I can name two Yankees headed for the Hall of Fame... "Am I really here?" -Naz Because "The Beach" has been available for a few weeks through HBO's On Demand and streaming services, I've gotten to see the early reactions to it, which tend to break down along three paths: 1)That was unbearable to watch because I felt so bad for Naz as his night out went so horribly awry; 2)That was unbearable to watch because Naz acted like such a complete idiot at every turn; 3)Even though I felt bad for Naz, and/or couldn't believe how stupid he kept being, I was riveted by the whole thing. »

How This ‘Game of Thrones’ Director Moved From Cannes to Westeros (Emmy Video)

4 July 2016 10:18 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

How did an indie auteur from Canada come to direct HBO’s spectacular epic “Game of Thrones?”

When writer-director Jeremy Podeswa was asked to helm an episode of Showtime series “Queer as Folk,” which was looking for local directors for its Canadian locations, he figured it was a temporary detour from his career as an indie auteur. His 1999 film, “The Five Senses,” was developed in the Sundance Labs and played Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. But after “Queer,” producer Alan Poul, who championed “The Five Senses” at Sundance, sought out Podeswa to direct HBO’s “Six Feet Under.” Podeswa did, enthusiastically, one for each of its five seasons.

Podeswa moved on to the period riches of HBO’s “Carnivale,” his first crack at a more elevated genre with fantastical elements. And somehow, he landed the episode in which just about every major character had sex. “It was not an accident,” he said in our video interview. »

‘All the Way’: Bryan Cranston reveals the Jackie Kennedy letter that made Lbj click for him

21 May 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Accidental president. Vietnam. Civil Rights Act. Bully. This is Lyndon B. Johnson’s legacy, or at least how he’s often remembered. New HBO film All the Way seeks to illuminate many sides of the man who stepped into the highest office in the land after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Bryan Cranston plays Lbj in the film, premiering on HBO tonight, following his Tony-winning turn as the president in All the Way on Broadway. After he’d already done extensive research and study of the play’s text (itself thoroughly researched by playwright Robert Schenkkan), Cranston went on a second visit to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, TX, and that’s where the person of Lbj really clicked for the actor. “The character is always outside of you until you hopefully allow it to seep in. Then it becomes a part of you,” Cranston told HitFix. »
