Big Disappointment
5 November 2011 | by (Hong Kong) – See all my reviews

There are Bollywood movies that are known for their performances and fancy direction. However, there are also Bollywood movies which sink without a trace. This movie Khanjar is the movie that comes to mind when talking about sinking wihthout a trace. I don't think anyone has even heard of this film, even die hard Sunil Shetty fans are going to disappointed. Not only is the film delayed but it fails in terms of everything from acting all the way to action. Even in the film is bad, usually we expect that mainstream actors like Sunil Shetty and Tabu have at least 50% of the film well handled. However, that is not even the case here. I think the actors were so fed up with the delay of the film that they abandoned it. From what I remember, the film contained 30-35 minutes of Sunil Shetty and Tabu in the film. The rest of the film was finished by some television actors whose names I don't know.

The movie actually has no proper story but this is how it exactly goes. It starts with a rift created between a husband and wife after the husband's assisttant creates a fake letter ensuring that the child in the wife's womb and the smaller son is his not Kumar's. The wife leaves with the younger son and the daughter while Raja(the elder son) lives with Kumar. Years later, Ajay(younger son) gets a job in Shimla and his mom agrees to move there after some reluctance. The main reason why she doesn't want to move to Shimla is because it reminds her of the injustice that happened to her in the past(husband telling her to leave). Ajay works for Jimmy who is the son of Kumar(different one). Their main enemies are the local don Pammi(Gulshan Grover) and his goons. Jimmy loves Pooja(Tabu) but Pooja falls for a poor stable boy Raja(Sunil Shetty). Raja lives with Anand Babu(Pankaj Dheer) who is always sad because his love left him for some rich guy. There is this killer who kills on the 13th of each month and this killer is avenging the death of someone he dearly loved. So many random people die and nearing the end it is found out that these dead people are partners of the new Kumar(the villain) and the killer is Raja(Sunil Shetty). Raja and his brother team up and kill the villains. Then the movie ends in a clichéd way where it is shown that Raja goes to Anand Babu and tells him that "I told you that I would unite with my love".

The movie has a decent concept of revenge dressed in the form of a killer using his knife to murder. However, the handling of the film and the whole tempo of the film is horribly executed. It looks like a bad B Grade film. When the film released, it failed to get any good numbers at the box office and became a disaster. The film had posters of Sunil Shetty on the cover making it look like a decent Shetty action flick. However, it was a big rip off as Sunil Shetty was not even a big part of the film. The film must have started in 1995 and not seen a release till 2003. Another annoying this is even for the parts where Shetty is present, he is dubbed by some idiot who fails to sound like Sunil Shetty. When Shetty has the mask on, it is Sunil Shetty 1 feet lower with a 100 pounds(some other dude). The stock footage of Shetty at the end used to ensure it is Sunil Shetty fighting is at night(when the fight scene at the end is at day time).

Direction by Chander Sharma is crap, he doesn't handle any scene properly. Nothing is well constructed, maybe one action scene where Sunil Shetty fights is worth watching.

Sunil Shetty gets hardly any scope and he is the victim for the lack of characterization. Tabu does a horrible job doing hardly anything but being mischief. The rest of the people are horrible B Grade televisions actors who don't do much. Mohan Joshi(famous Bollywood villain from the 90s) is wasted as well.

On the whole, Khanjar: the Knife is an awful film that deserves nothing but a kick on its butt for being such a crass film. It deserves hatred for using the cheap tactic of using the posters and stock footage of mainstream actors to promote a film when the main actors have no scope.
