Zaillian Keen On Directing "Timecrimes"

20 December 2011 9:25 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Oscar-winning scribe Steve Zaillian, whose most current work is adapting the script for David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" which opens tonight in the United States, says he's considering stepping into the director's chair on the remake of Spanish cult sci-fi thriller "Timecrimes" set up at Dreamworks Pictures.

Nacho Vigalondo's original follows a man who repeatedly goes back in time an hour in an attempt to alter the events of a crime. Zaillian came onboard to write the remake back in January. While no director was set at the time, David Cronenberg had previously been linked as a potential candidate. The Canadian helmer however dismissed the talk the other month.

Zaillian tells Coming Soon that "That's something I might direct but I don't know. We have to cast it, but it's a tricky one, because I want to make it really low budget. I don't want »

David Thomson: Catherine Keener

30 June 2011 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Catherine Keener has been a supporting actor for years, with a reputation for being interesting in valuable, offbeat pictures

Catherine Keener is a beloved figure among the several million who are always hoping for the best from American independent pictures. She promises feeling, humour and a sense of life as it is really lived, plus a nice acidity. Keener has been attractive without threatening outright beauty or glamour. Her persona springs from ironic intelligence and that's what any wise man or woman should be searching for in life. The trouble is that in America, women actors are often supposed to be knockouts who dominate their pictures just by virtue of standing there and letting themselves be photographed.

So Keener has been a supporting actor for more than 25 years, with a reputation for being different and interesting in valuable, offbeat pictures. Indeed, she has often been taken as a talisman and even a guarantee. »

Blu-Ray Review: Tom Cruise’s Star Power Shines Bright in ‘The Firm’

31 May 2011 7:49 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Sydney Pollack was a filmmaker who could do anything: sweeping romantic melodramas, side-splitting satires and epic yet intimate tragedies. It’s easy to forget that Pollack could also craft a superb commercial thriller every once in a while, and 1993’s “The Firm” falls under that category. Despite a few dated elements, the picture holds up surprisingly well.

Author John Grisham and star Tom Cruise were both at the peak of their powers when audiences first flocked to this legal thriller, based on Grisham’s hit 1991 novel of the same name. After playing a series of young hotshots tutored by veteran mentors, Cruise was clearly ready to delve into meatier roles. He delivered the best performance of his career in 1989’s “Born on the Fourth of July,” and “The Firm” offers ample proof of Cruise’s maturity as an actor.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

Scott Frank May Write Up 'Houdini'

24 May 2011 3:50 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Did you know that there's a "Houdini" project in town that's lifting off the ground right now? Well there is, and Columbia Pictures may have found their ideal writer to pen a version of the script on the famous magician and escape artist. Screenwriter Scott Frank is in the middle of talks to join the project and write "Houdini." Directing the film is Francis Lawrence ("I Am Legend").Scott Frank has been in the mainstream writing scene for quite awhile, penning the scripts for several big movies like "Minority Report," "The Interpreter" and "Marley & Me." There's apparently several television and film productions of Houdini in-development at the moment, but this is the only one that's gaining any sort of traction."Houdini" focuses on the magician who is striving to expose a troubled, beautiful spiritualist as a fraud. As he becomes obsessed with her, he starts to believe she's authentic, only »

Steve Zaillian Re-Writing Jack Ryan Script

3 February 2011 12:06 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Steve Zaillian is in negotiations to rewrite the script for the Jack Ryan reboot at Paramount Pictures reports Reuters.

Chris Pine is slated to star as the budding intelligence analyst from the Tom Clancy novel series and the four previous film adaptations. Previously titled "Moscow", the project now seems to be going by the moniker "Jack Ryan".

Shooting was to kick off in Budapest in March, then got pushed back to later in the Spring. Now with re-writes, the start date has been pushed back again - potentially up to a month. The studio can't risk any further delays though as Pine is committed to their "Star Trek" sequel.

Jack Bender is directing the film. Zaillian ("Schindler's List," "The Interpreter") most recently penned the adaptation for David Fincher's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." He also previously adapted one of the earlier Jack Ryan films, 1994's "Clear and Present Danger »

Steve Zaillian Rewriting Paramount's Struggling 'Jack Ryan' Project

2 February 2011 1:02 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

I don't know about everyone, but I feel like we've been hearing/writing about this new Jack Ryan movie for years, but of course, it's still stuck in development hell. As of last August when the leaked Paramount memo hit, they were looking for someone to rewrite the script for Moscow, which is the title of the new Jack Ryan movie that Chris Pine has been attached to for a while, and Lost's Jack Bender is slated to direct. Looks like they found a new writer, as Deadline is reporting that Oscar winner Steve Zaillian (of Hannibal, Gangs of New York, The Interpreter, American Gangster, Moneyball) is the latest to be hired to rewrite their script. Deadline's update states that the Moscow is tentative and officially it still doesn't have a formal title or start date. It's an original story not based on one of Tom Clancy's books, »

Steven Zaillian named 2011 wgaw screen Laurel Award honoree

19 January 2011 11:15 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Hollywoodnews.com: Academy Award-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian will receive the Writers Guild of America, West’s 2011 Laurel Award for Screen, honoring lifetime achievement in outstanding writing for motion pictures, to be presented at the 2011 Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Saturday, February 5, 2011, in Hollywood.

Steven Zaillian’s best scripts not only function as intelligent, thought-provoking works that uplift and inspire audiences, but often, as in the case of his screenplays such as Schindler’s List, they act as witness to crucial chapters in our collective history. His impressive body of work provides a benchmark that all screenwriters aspire to,” said Wgaw President John Wells.

Zaillian is perhaps best known for his screenplay for the acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler’s List, based on the novel by Thomas Keneally. In 1994, Zaillian received an Academy Award for his screen adaptation of Schindler’s List, as the film went on to garner multiple awards that year, »

Interview: Nicole Kidman Breaks Down Her Toughest Role–Herself

19 January 2011 2:17 AM, PST | Scott Feinberg | See recent Scott Feinberg news »

Nicole Kidman is a 43-year-old wife and mother of four who also happens to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world and one of the most respected actresses of her generation. Therefore, as you can imagine, it was a great privilege and thrill for me to be granted a half-hour one-on-one interview with her last Saturday — the day between the Critics Choice and the Golden Globe awards, both of which she attended as a best actress nominee for her performance as a mother grieving over the death of her child in the critically-acclaimed low-budget indie “Rabbit Hole” (Lionsgate, 12/17, PG-13, trailer) — and pick her brain about a wide-range of topics. We met on the second floor of Siren Studios, a sparsely decorated building used by professional photographers for photoshoots like the one that Kidman was to be a subject of following our conversation. Review: Rabbit Hole

Plot: After losing their child in a freak accident, middle-class couple Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie (Aaron Eckhart) struggle to put their lives back together, and save their marriage. Review: For better or worse, Rabbit Hole is sure to be known as the film that gave Nicole Kidman her face back. What I mean by that is, going back at least as far as The Interpreter, Kidman's gorgeous face has been more or less immobile, with her looking either like she get a facelift, or just a hell »

The Scorecard Review Movie Awards: Best of the Decade (Almost) – Complete Results

The decade is over (and has been for a year). Now, we finally know what The Scorecard Review readers believe were the best of the best in the Tsr Movie Awards. There were 501 total voters who voted. Yes, I know it’s not technically a decade. We’ve been doing The Scorecard Review Movie Awards for eight years and decided it was time for a “Best of,” hence the “(Almost).”

If there is one thing we learned, it was The Decade of the Ledger, Heath Ledger. Ellen Page, Lord of the Rings, Meryl Streep, Avatar and Leonardo DiCaprio all had their moments as well. I will offer complete commentary on each individual category so stay tuned for that.

Look for The 9th Annual Tsr Movie Awards in February 2011.
