i saw this film early one morning on IFC and haven't been able to get it out of my head since. it is chock full of insanity. basic plot: two roommates are late on the rent and have to come up with a quick way to get some cash. it is beautifully shot, well written, and funny as hell. please if anyone out there loves this movie as much as i do, try contacting pat healy so we can convince him to release it on dvd/vhs.
Okay, sometimes it's fun to completely dice up films and analyze them thoroughly, as folks are often inclined to do with the classics like Citizen Kane, A Clockwork Orange, and other such films that require intelligent study as they are high watermarks of human intellectual achievement in film. But every once in a while a film comes by that is just so super-awesome and phantasmogorically outta sight that to try and dissect the film's plot, characters, and message would be a criminal sin against nature. Therefor, all I'm going to say about this glorious 15-minute revelation is that you need to go out and see this right away, by any means necessary even if you have to beg, borrow, and steal. It's not out on video but do not let that stop you. Hurry, go now! Flee!!! Flee!!!
The above reviews both state that this is not available on DVD but I
have had this on "The Official Selections: Featuring the Best Short
Films from the Sundance Film Festival (2003)" for years. It not only
contains this wonderful short but several other excellent ones as well.
But make no mistake, Mullit is the best of the bunch on this
compilation. It is available on Amazon and I'm sure elsewhere.
Mullit is about an everyman version of the type of character Steve Mcqueen might have played, hence the title is an homage to McQueen's Bullitt. Despite the sometimes fantastical characters and events, Earl Lippy is a believable down on his luck, ill fated guy who has a plan to turn things around. Unfortunately nothing seems to go as planned, friendships are tested and somehow Earl keeps getting up every time he's knocked down.
Mullitt is a fun, well directed and acted short that features several names and faces you might recognize.
