With the production finished earlier this year, some people were wondering when the general public would get to see the film. But, it is 30 minutes long and, according to the press release, the filmmakers are planning to do a feature-length version of the film. The film premieres tomorrow on Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network. For those of you that are already crying about not getting that channel via your cable provider, you can actually get it via Sling TV. Silent Hills, Metal Gear - what's going on at Konami?

29 April 2015 1:33 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Once a major, innovative force in gaming, Konami seems to be having a creative wobble of late. Ryan casts a worried eye over the situation.

Last year, a demo simply called P.T. appeared on the PlayStation Network and scared the life out of players with its looping corridors of shadows and horrors. This was, we later learned, an early taste of Silent Hills - an evolution of Konami’s Silent Hill franchise headed up by legendary game designer Hideo Kojima and similarly adored geek director Guillermo del Toro. Here, surely, was a match made in videogame heaven.

Today, P.T. makes its scheduled departure from the PlayStation Network; if you haven’t downloaded it now, it’s likely you’ll never get to play it. What was once heralded as a glimpse at a potentially fascinating collaboration has now become a depressing symbol of what could have been.

Have kung fu films lost their punch?

28 April 2015 12:57 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Since its heyday, kung fu seems to be giving way to other action genres, but could it be making a comeback?

There was a time when everyone was indeed kung fu fighting. Films belonging to the genre, made popular in the 1970s by the late Bruce Lee, helped to boost Hong Kong cinema, not to mention the careers of various Chinese actors such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Jet Li. However, in recent years, it seems that the kung fu film is losing the raw bad-assery that fans have grown up watching. As martial arts films are now evolving to feature more computer animation and culture rather than pure, unadulterated violence, has kung fu lost its touch?

The first kung fu film dates back to the late 1930s, when folk heroes and famed martial artists Fong Sai-Yuk and Wong Fei-Hung were immortalised for the first time (they would »

Daredevil episode 10 viewing notes: Nelson V. Murdock

19 April 2015 11:22 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The speed at which Daredevil has us emotionally invested in its characters is a lesson to other superhero TV shows...

With the whole series of Daredevil now available on Netflix, the race is on to reach the ending before someone spoils it for you. But that presents us with a problem. How do we approach reviews? It's not much use speculating about the future of the series when it's available at a moment's notice, but watching the whole thing in one go for a single review is impractical for anyone with a day job and personal relationships to maintain – to say nothing of how difficult it is to critically appraise 12 hours of television if you don't savour the instalments properly.

That's why, instead of traditional reviews, we're trying something new. An episode-by-episode unpicking of the show, looking at its techniques, characters and use of the source material. Call them annotations, »

‘The Golden Era’ Tops Hong Kong Film Awards

19 April 2015 5:46 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ann Hui and her biographical drama “The Golden Era” were the big winners at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday night. Hui collected five awards including best film and best director.

The expensive, three-hour picture has been a regular winner on the Asian awards and festival circuit, but it flopped badly at the box office in both China and Hong Kong. Its continuing awards tally may reflect Hui’s efforts to make a large-scale art-house film at a time in Chinese cinema history that is often described as a ‘golden era,’ for growing commerciality and the huge expansion of the mainland Chinese box office.

The best acting winners were Sean Lau Ching-wan in Hong Kong actioner “Overheard 3” and Vicky Zhao Wei in “Dearest,” Peter Chan Ho-sun’s drama about child abductions in China.

Other significant wins on the night included singer turned actress Ivana Wong’s double win »
