The 100 Greatest Comedies of All-Time, According to BBC’s Critics Poll

22 August 2017 5:43 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After polling critics from around the world for the greatest American films of all-time, BBC has now forged ahead in the attempt to get a consensus on the best comedies of all-time. After polling 253 film critics, including 118 women and 135 men, from 52 countries and six continents a simple, the list of the 100 greatest is now here.

Featuring canonical classics such as Some Like It Hot, Dr. Strangelove, Annie Hall, Duck Soup, Playtime, and more in the top 10, there’s some interesting observations looking at the rest of the list. Toni Erdmann is the most recent inclusion, while the highest Wes Anderson pick is The Royal Tenenbaums. There’s also a healthy dose of Chaplin and Lubitsch with four films each, and the recently departed Jerry Lewis has a pair of inclusions.

Check out the list below (and my ballot) and see more on their official site.

28 Best Drunk Scenes in Film

17 March 2017 2:46 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, arguably the biggest drinking holiday of the year, we looked at some of the best drunk moments to grace the silver screen. From Humphrey Bogart’s classic, heartbreaking “of all the gin joints” speech in “Casablanca,” to the utterly ridiculous scene in “Team America” when the puppets spew their guts up, here are the 28 best drunk scenes on film.

Leaving Las Vegas” — Booze Run

Although not a traditional “drunk scene,” the opening scene of “Leaving Las Vegas” — which sees Nicolas Cage’s Ben Sanderson dancing through a liquor aisle piling his cart sky high with booze — is as good a prelude to this list as any.

Arthur” — Introducing Princess Gloria

Dudley Moore’s Arthur spends the majority of the film tipping back drinks, but his introduction of “Princess Gloria” to his aunt and uncle at a restaurant — and his insistence that Rhode Island could »

What Is the Most Ridiculous Sex Scene From a Movie? — IndieWire Critics Survey

13 February 2017 9:44 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: In dubious honor of “Fifty Shades Darker,” what is the most ridiculous sex scene from a movie?

Mark Harris (@MarkHarrisNYC), Vulture/Film Comment

I’m sure others will easily top this, but I always think of Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone in the terrible 1994 action film “The Specialist,” having laboriously glossy, oiled, carefully pube-concealing, solemn, positionally exhausting intercourse while mouthing tedious expository dialogue in a shower that appears to be the size of a studio apartment. The 90s were a boom time for bad movie sex, and this is Hall of Fame level in that so much money, time and effort has gone »

Gem Wheeler Aug 15, 2017

2007s' Hot Rod arrives at its tenth birthday - and there's plenty here to celebrate...

Stuntman extraordinaire Rod Kimble is about to face the challenge of his life. If he can jump fifteen buses on his motorbike – that’s one more than Evel Knievel; you can check, online – and raise the $50,000 required for his stepdad Frank’s life-saving surgery, he’ll be acclaimed as a hero. Far more importantly, he’ll also be able to kick Frank’s ass. Rod’s been mocked and bullied by his stepdad for a long time. This is his chance to prove himself as a man, gain Frank’s respect, and win the heart of his next-door neighbour, Denise. There’s only one problem: Rod’s never actually managed to perform a stunt successfully. Ancestors, protect him…

Since its release in 2007, Hot Rod’s gradually attained the well-deserved cult classic status »
