The second fully computer generated feature film produced in-house by Disney, rather than being hand-drawn, the first one being Dinosaur (2000). This would be the new style for every Disney animated feature film afterwards, apart from The Princess and the Frog (2009) and Winnie the Pooh (2011).
In the scene where Buck Cluck is driving Chicken Little to school, they stop at a red light. In the background, you see a bird walking into a storefront window twice. The store owner comes out to investigate. He's a bull. The store is full of China. The clichéd "Bull in a China Shop".
Loosely based upon the fable "The Sky is Falling". The story only bears minute similarities to the movie, such as the idea of "the sky is falling" and the rhyming names (Turkey Lurkey, Foxy Loxy, et al). The story was previously adapted by Disney in 1943 as Chicken Little (1943).
This film had an exclusive trailer in the film The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). It starts out with the beginning of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's teaser trailer and then turned into 'Chicken Little'.
The technical team built a digital tool called "Chicken Wire", which is a geometric wire-frame model of the characters that the animators could squash, stretch, and smear. They wanted to get a 2-D animation style in 3-D animation.
The original plans were to have the beginning of this film, telling the establishing story of Chicken Little and the acorn, in traditional ("hand-drawn") animation. Don Knotts, who supplied the voice of Turkey Lurkey, the town Mayor, recorded the voice track as the narrator for this sequence. The idea was abandoned and that part of the story was refashioned as a main part of the film and done in computer animation.
Holly Hunter was never considered for Abby Mallard, she was the original voice of Chicken Little. she recorded all her lines, but was replaced by Zach Braff when the studio decided to make the character a male.
This is the last Walt Disney animation film to be classified as Walt Disney Feature Animation. Starting with Meet the Robinsons (2007). Two years later, the new name becomes Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Chicken Little describes the piece of the sky that falls as being "shaped like a stop sign," implying that it is shaped like an octogon. When another piece is shown, it is actually in the shape of a hexagon.
