Boxoffice preview: Boys, prepare to meet thy 'Doom'

23 October 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Preteen boys are set to hit the theaters in droves for Doom, Universal Pictures' wide opening of the video game adaptation. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures will bring adult and family fare to the table, respectively, hoping to lure consumers back to the boxoffice. 20th Century Fox is offering Regency Pictures' R-rated thriller Stay as the weekend's fourth wide release, but a confusing story line has left industry watchers befuddled over its gross potential. The R-rated Doom, from Polish helmer Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cradle 2 the Grave, Exit Wounds), stars Dwayne The Rock Johnson as the leader of a futuristic Marine unit that must face off against monsters that infiltrate his base after an experiment goes wrong. If this were last year, industry watchers would put the film's gross in the mid- to high-$20 million range, but a depressed boxoffice has lowered expectations. »
