Storyline

Single, ambitious, magazine assistant editor Jane Grant has just received an invitation to her younger cousin's wedding, and it's engraved with two of the most dreaded words a perpetually available single can encounter: "plus guest." Come wedding day, Jane had better deliver. After all, she's already told everyone, including her meddlesome and obnoxious Aunt Ina and now-famous high school nemesis Natasha Nutley, that she's in a serious relationship. Now, Jane has two months to find a guy to fit the lie, complete the guest list, and save face. If the series of miserable set-ups orchestrated by her well-meaning best friends Eloise and Amanda are any indication, Jane's in for big trouble. From first date to blind date, from double date to last date, the match game is on-and with millions of men to pick from, Jane is sure to find Mr. Right, right? Quotes

[Amanda and Jane are shopping for gifts for Jane's cousin Dana and her husband-to-be.]
Amanda: Did you find anything for Dana and Larry?
Jane: Oh, hardly. I mean, what do you get a guy that's funny but serious, athletic but poetic, masculine but feminine...?
Amanda: Boyfriend?
Jane: Of course. The one thing they don't have here.

Not So Bad
20 April 2004 | by (Fairbanks, U.S. Territory of Alaska) – See all my reviews

First of all, voting for movies on IMDB is nuts sometimes... or people are nuts. This movie does not deserve a `10' vote. No way, no how. See Jane Date was good, though. Surprisingly. A couple noticeable negatives: some bad foley and the fact this was filmed in Montreal but was supposed to take place in New York City. I think that's really unfortunate. Does Canada's economy need the money that bad? Alright enough about that... one more negative is the emphasis many people have on a man's looks. I'll admit as a single man a woman's looks are important but my God, come on now, people've gotta stop being so superficial! Yet one more negative was the emphasis on the `need' to be dating and the `need' to have a boyfriend. How come they don't make movies for men like this where a man `needs' to be dating and a man `needs' to have a girlfriend? I'll tell ya why - because it's not right. Alright already - what was good about this movie? What worked? Charisma Carpenter worked! She was just about perfect almost the entire time she was on camera. Wow! I've enjoyed her in Buffy but this blows away everything she's done in that show. She was wonderful for this role and the writing helped. Most of the time the dialogue was very good. There were some funny lines now and then but mostly a lot of sarcasm which worked perfectly. Through the course of the movie Jane discovers a couple things about herself which break her out of that `need' to date mold. I thought it would turn out, through all her dating, that she finds The One. Jane came to a realization that she didn't need to constantly be with somebody to be happy. But in the end, of course, she perhaps did find The One afterall... but not how I expected which was nice and not as predictable as most romantic comedies. How does this compare to the book? Ya know what? It doesn't matter. The book is the book and this is the movie of the book where things can be changed, added, left out and so forth. The book and movie are two totally separate things and shouldn't be compared. This movie on its own was pretty good, better than most ABC Family offerings. A chick flick indeed but one a man can enjoy as well. Not the perfect movie by any means. Charisma Carpenter nearly gets an A+ but for the movie itself I give it a B+ that's worth a watch.
