Almost all character dialogue is improvised by the actors.
According to an interview with Thomas Lennon, the main cast member who ruins the most takes by laughing out loud is Carlos Alazraqui.
The police station scenes are filmed in a real working police substation in Carson, California. According to Thomas Lennon, some female employees of the station complained to their superiors about the short shorts that he wears as his Lt. Dangle character.
Niecy Nash wore prosthetics to make her body appear larger to play her character Raineesha Williams.
The main actors frequently appear on the show as other characters with their faces blurred. -Kerri Kenney: Jackie the Prostitute -Niecy Nash: T.T. -Carlos Alazraqui: Chief Carl and -Robert Ben Garant: Mime, The Streaker. Wendi McLendon-Covey played a wife servicing her husband and the Water Heater Lady.
Scenes for the season two finale could not be shot in the Carson Police Department because an officer was shot. The cast and crew moved across the street to a community center.
The show was originally conceived in 2001 as a sketch show titled "Ugly Americans" for the Fox network. Scenes with the police characters were to be short interstitials between longer sketches. But during filming, the cast realized that they enjoyed playing the police characters so much that they decided to make the series about them. A pilot was shot but it was rejected by Fox. Two years later, it was remade for Comedy Central which picked it up.
Thomas Lennon said his sunglasses he wore through out the series where Gucci, but came from a discount store, as he did not want the other cast members to feel bad.
In Season 2, the artist sketched wanted posters in the squad room are all modeled off of the crew members of the show.
The show was canceled on August 13, 2009. Thomas Lennon announced it through Twitter.
Amy Brassette was a cast member in the original unaired pilot for Fox. When Comedy Central picked it up in 2003, Brassette was unable to reprise her role because she was appearing in the Fox series Cedric the Entertainer Presents (2002). She guest appeared in the ninth episode.

One of the apartment buildings seen in Season 2 was torn down shortly after filming was finished in Carson.
