Notice I didn't say best movies -- that territory has been well covered by far more passionate list makers than I am. (By the way, do you agree with me that a devotion to ranking is primarily a male urge? Tell me three good reasons why I'm right or wrong. At any rate, I don't have the gene for it.)
As the first decade of the 21st century comes to a close, though, here's fodder for your New Year's Eve party: A list, in no particular order, of 10 movie developments from the past 10 years that have impressed, depressed, excited, upset,

'The Back-Up Plan' art: Improper use of Alex O'Loughlin

Alex O'Loughlin couldn't very well be shirtless on a poster for The Back-Up Plan, his April 2010 romantic comedy with Jennifer Lopez. Could he? And his 50-50 split of the frame with Lopez, who returns to the genre for the first time since 2005's Monster-in-Law, is actually quite impressive and a fine testament to his loyal female fan base. But would it have been asking too much to see his entire face?

Jennifer Lopez: 'Louboutins' Music Video 'Going to Be Really Empowering'

Jennifer Lopez has revealed some details about the concept of the music video for her single "Louboutins". Speaking in a recent interview with 103.5 Ktu, the wife of Marc Anthony claimed, "It's going to be really empowering." Elaborating her statement, Lopez further stated, "It's going to be about that woman, you know when you have that moment when you realize you have to really get out of here that's the moment we're trying to cauterize in the video."
"Even when you know that it's gonna hurt later, you feel good about making the decision, so you're like 'I decided! I'm walking up out the house right now'," the 40-year-old beauty added. "That's the part we're gonna do in the video except I'm gonna dance my way out the house dancing, and maybe she'll take her Louboutins with her."
Lopez, moreover, admitted that "Louboutins" video will feature a lot of dance routines.

'Ugly Truth' Director May Romance the Stone

Ready for two more 80s movies revivals? Pajiba says Romancing the Stone is getting an update, which isn't exactly news, but it was dormant for almost a year before news of a remake went anywhere. Now the scuttlebutt is that Robert Luketic might direct, which has to thrill you no end.
Pajiba overstates it when saying Luketic is "the worst director in Hollywood," although I'm certainly not a fan. 21 was better than I thought going in, as was Legally Blonde, but and Monster-in-Law were not very good. The problem with a remake like this, not that it should be off-limits for any overriding reason in particular.
However, good luck matching the chemistry between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. I mean, seriously. That was a once-or-twice-in-a-generation pairing that peaked a couple of times, in the original and, of course, War of the Roses. That brings up another point: Good luck matching

Katherine Heigel To Star In Two 80's Remake

With every one of these remake posts, a little part of me dies violently. Well, it looks like Robert Luketic ("The Ugly Truth," "Monster-in-Law") may direct the in-development "Romancing the Stone" remake. Is it me, or does that seem like a step down? Granted, Robert Zemeckis wasn't big yet at the time he made his version, but I just can't see Luketic following the same path. Maybe in ten years he'll be remaking Zemeckis' own "Polar Express" using motion capture again. I kid, but also, how true does that seem? Also, Sony wants Katherine Heigl to star in a remake of "Overboard," which starred Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel back in 1987. Shoot that is a long time ago, it needs to be updated! What is the connection here? Word on the street is that Robert Luketic, who directed Heigl in "The Ugly Truth," may want her to star in the "Stone" remake,

'Romancing the Stone' Moves Towards Production

Last December we reported that 20th Century Fox had hired Daniel McDermott (Eagle Eye) to write a remake of the 1984 Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner film, Romancing the Stone. We were a tad snide with our editorializing.
With increasingly good reason, it would seem. Pajiba is reporting that the film is moving forward, and that Robert Luketic (Legally Blone, The Ugly Truth) could be tapped to direct the project. Luketic is perhaps not the most respected director in Hollywood. As Pajiba describes it: He directed The Ugly Truth and Monster-in-Law, two very bad movies that apparently allowed him to fall on his ass backwards up the Hollywood ladder.
Luketic also has Barbarella in development, a film in which few seem to have any confidence, chiefly because of his involvement.
All of which begs the question: Why bother with this Romancing the Stone remake at all, since it's likely to be just

The Ugly Truth Director Luketic Eyes Romancing The Stone Remake

Fans of Romancing the Stone-- which includes pretty much everyone raised in the 80s-- are assuming the worst today, having heard the news over at Pajiba that Robert Luketic is likely to direct the remake of the 1980s film. The jump-to-conclusions fear is that Luketic would cast the stars of his last film The Ugly Truth in the lead roles, meaning that the duo of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner would be replaced by Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl. Blech, I know.
But really, there's no reason to assume he'll cast them and not the pair from his earlier movie Monster-in-Law-- that would be Michael Vartan and Jennifer Lopez-- or even the two leads in his next film Killers, Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. There are limitless ways that this could be awful! What's clear, though, is that by hiring Luketic the producers are going for straight middle-of-the-road

Sykes' Anger At Proposition 8 Prompted Her To 'Come Out'

Comedienne Wanda Sykes chose to reveal she was gay last year when California's same sex marriage bill was revoked because she was so incensed by lawmakers' decision.
The Monster-in-Law star, who was married to record producer David Hall in the 1990s, never confirmed her sexuality until November 2008, when she spoke out against the state legislation Proposition 8, which saw homosexual unions made illegal just six months after they were declared valid.
And it was only then that Sykes felt it necessary to speak up and defend her lifestyle, revealing she had wed her partner of two years, Alex, while same-sex marriage was still legal.
She says, "(I came out) to put a face on it. And also I was angry, I was mad. I wanted to say, 'Look, you're not gonna treat me as a second class citizen.' I had to speak up, I know what my rights are and I had to speak up."
The couple has since welcomed twins Olivia and Lucas.

Fool me once (The Cell), shame on you, Jennifer Lopez. Fool me twice (The Wedding Planner...sorry but when the lead character agreed to that arranged marriage to Justin Chambers, my inner feminist tried to knock himself unconscious with a blunt object), shame on me. Fool me three times (Enough...which should've been Rated J, for Jank!), and you can understand why back in 2002, I made a promise to myself that I would never again waste my hard-earned money seeing a J.Lo movie in the theater. (No, that free press screening of Monster-in-Law does not violate my vow.) Last night, however, a publicist sent me some new photos of Moonlight's Alex O'Loughlin, shirtless and driving a tractor*, in a scene from Lopez's 2010 rom-com vehicle The Back-Up Plan. Suddenly, the reasons for my seven-year boycott are fleeing my brain like the seeds of a late-fall dandelion in a stiff wind.

You've Got to Be Kidding - New 'Barbarella' Won't Be Campy

I've got an idea, let's just try and take every campy film out there, especially the ones only loved for their irresistible badness, and morph them into serious cinema. Who needs a wise-cracking Ash and his boomstick when you can have a stoic and bland hero growl whilst massacring baddies? Why have fuzzy killer tomatoes attack when they can be real tomatoes with an honest blood lust and fangs? Why have car races where you get points for hitting passerby when you can have grown men racing around for their lives and taking it seriously?
That last one, we've already gotten in the form of Death Race, and now The Hollywood Reporter reports that Joe Gazzam has been tapped to write the new adaptation of Barbarella, and: "The new take on the iconic character will not be campy, though it will keep the sexuality; there will be seductions, but the

Never Back Down Director Takes Arena

It's been a heck of a year for fans of sci-fi actioners, and while the news is unlikely to generate the same levels of hysteria as Avatar, Summit Entertainment's sci-fi Arena has moved a step closer to reality by scoring itself a director in Jeff Wadlow.Wadlow, who directed Cry Wolf and Summit's disappointingly flyweight fight drama Never Back Down, was working to develop prison-escape drama The Tomb for Summit but was moved onto Arena by the studio when that project stalled. The arena in question will be the battleground where a group of modern soldiers are compelled to take on the greatest warriors from different eras of history in the traditional mano-to-mano combat. Which sounds like a potentially intriguing mix of Gladiator and Running Man to our ears, or Us TV show Deadliest Warrior. The script was written by newcomer screenwriters Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell.
