20 interesting films from one-time movie megastars

17 October 2013 6:20 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Odd List Greg Foster 18 Oct 2013 - 06:16

We look at 20 former A-list actors, and the interesting film choices they've made...

There comes a time in every A-list actor's life when they gather their thoughts and take a step back into smaller budget or more leftfield fare - and for a variety of reasons. They may want to work with a certain director or an emerging directing talent. They might be taken by a fantastic script. They might fancy a new artistic direction. They may even have a spiritual epiphany and decide to eschew Hollywood and all its decadent trappings, or they may simply just not have a choice, since the big roles have long since dried up for them.

The reason for this list then, is to look at some of those shining lights, the household names, and at the films they took up as proof of their artistic integrity. »

One Direction Flick Suffers One of Worst Ever Fri/Sat Drop-Off Rates

One Direction: This Is Us’ movie weekend box office: One of steepest Friday-to-Saturday drops ever (photo: One Direction members Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson) The 3D concert movie One Direction: This Is Us failed to get even close to the $20 million mark at the North American box office this Labor Day weekend (Fri-Sun) despite relatively strong opening-day grosses. Featuring One Direction band members Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson, and directed by Morgan Spurlock, whose Super Size Me was shortlisted for the 2004 Best Documentary Feature Academy Award, One Direction: This Is Us debuted at 2,735 locations, pulling in a not inconsiderable $8.9 million on Thursday evening / Friday, August 29-30, 2013, which should have meant approximately $20 million by Sunday evening — especially taking into account that Monday is a national holiday. But it was not meant to be. Whereas Justin Bieber: Never Say Never »

'Red 2' (2013) Movie Review

18 July 2013 11:30 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I had little interest in seeing Red 2 as I walked into the theater. The 2010 film was middling at best. In my review I described it as "one of those films you don't mind watching just as much as you don't seek it out." The same could be said of Red 2 and yet, it's a far better film that drops the need to focus energy on the fact the characters aren't your stereotypical, young CIA agents and international assassins. Instead it tells a story that just so happens to feature such characters. At just under two hours I walked in worried I'd want to leave 15 minutes in. Fact of the matter is, the film goes by smoothly, largely benefiting because it gets back to action that's tangible rather than merely a dull exercise in CG overload (aka the official motto of Summer Movie Season 2013). All summer long we've watched »

Review: 'Red 2' Starring Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren & More

18 July 2013 10:09 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Red 2” begins with a cool comic book-style credits sequence, paying a short homage to its Warren Ellis-penned roots. Too short, in fact. Just as we’re starting to get into the warmly hued titles, we’re thrown headlong into the live-action, high-stakes world of retired government agents...shopping at Costco. The film has numerous issues, but the most distracting is the inconsistent bursts of stylized animations, buried between unimaginative shots and sequences. They serve as setting transitions, announcing our heroes’ arrival in Hong Kong and Paris, but they’re oddly skipped when the former spies land in London and Teterboro. Well, we understand the lack of fanfare for the New Jersey town, but London? “Red” helmer Robert Schwentke was apparently too busy directing “R.I.P.D.” to make the follow-up, so Dean Parisot makes an unremarkable return with his first feature since 2005’s “Fun with Dick and Jane.” As we're »

Bruce Willis and Co. are Heroes in New TV Spots for Red 2

18 July 2013 5:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

After re-watching Robert Schwentke’s original movie over the weekend, I’m even more excited for the arrival of Red 2, which is heading into Us cinemas tomorrow.

The sequel sees Dean Parisot take over the helm in Schwentke’s place, with the latter focusing instead on directing R.I.P.D. (which sees him reunite with the ever-brilliant Mary-Louise Parker). And with just one more day to go before Red 2 hits in the States, we’ve got two new TV spots to share, in which we get to see Bruce Willis and co. in action.

In Red 2, the high-octane action-comedy sequel to the worldwide sleeper hit, retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all »

Watch: 'Red 2' Fires Off Amusing and Timely Nsa Themed TV Spot

11 July 2013 8:00 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Following the most recent trailer for Red 2, the action ensemble starring Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich and more looks like it's going to be a great blast later this summer. In fact, Summit Entertainment has already hired franchise writers Jon and Erich Hoeber to start working on the script for Red 3. But we still have a few weeks before Red 2 hits theaters, and the marketing team has cleverly used the headline making news about the Nsa phone call monitoring system and President Obama's speech reacting to the revelation in a new TV spot for the film. Hopefully the sequel delivers the goods. Watch now! Here's the Nsa-themed TV spot for Dean Parisot's Red 2 from Summit Entertainment: Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest, Fun with Dick and Jane) will be taking over for director Robert Schwentke on Red 2, and the story follows our veteran »

2 New TV Spots for Red 2 – ‘Russia’s Deadliest’

2 July 2013 7:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

There’s no denying that this July is one of the busiest, blockbuster-heavy months we’ve seen for a long time at the cinema, and it’s going to be interesting to see how high each of them soar. Without a doubt, Red 2 is one of the handful I’m looking forward to most.

Robert Schwentke’s original 2010 blockbuster was one of the funniest action-comedies we’ve seen in a long time, and the sequel is understandably something I’ve been excited about for a while now.

All that we’ve seen from the film in recent weeks and months has promised another brilliant action ride. And with just a few weeks left on the clock, Summit have released two new TV spots that set the mood wonderfully.

Robert Schwentke’s Red was very much a highlight for action-comedy fare in recent years, and I’m really looking forward to seeing Bruce Willis and co. return this summer for the sequel, Red 2.

The chemistry between these characters was brilliant the first time around, and that has me excited for what’s still to come. We saw an awesome first full-length trailer a few weeks back. And with its mid-July Us release date fast approaching, Summit have released two great new TV spots to help get us back in the right frame of mind.

Bruce Willis and co. will be back on the big screen this summer in Red 2, following on from Robert Schwentke’s hilarious action-comedy of 2010.

Watch a Second Trailer for 'Red 2'

26 April 2013 12:02 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Here's a film I don't quite get, but perhaps that's because I wasn't necessarily a big fan of the first one and don't understand who would be all that interested in seeing a sequel, but Red 2 is coming no matter what on July 19 and a new trailer has arrived to prove it. The film brings back the geriatric team of retired CIA agents including returning stars Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren with newcomers including Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Byung Hun Lee under the direction of Dean Parisot (Fun with Dick and Jane). This time around retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses (Willis) and friends reunite to track down a missing portable nuclear device. The mission takes them to Paris, London and Moscow and I don't think we should expect logic to play much of a role. Give the new trailer a watch below and »

Watch: Full 'Red 2' Trailer Puts Willis & Malkovich Back into Action

"What happens in the Kremlin, stays int he Kremlin." The retired but extremely dangerous crew of Red is back in the aptly titled sequel Red 2 with Bruce Willis and John Malkovich back in action after being set up by an unknown party. And now they're on Interpol's most wanted list with Byung Hun Lee in tow as one bad ass trained killer. This second trailer for the summer release looks like it might even be more fun than the first film, especially with a cooky Anthony Hopkins, and a feisty Catherine Zeta-Jones. Plus, it's just awesome seeing Helen Mirren in a role like this again with ridiculous action all around. Watch it! First Full-Length Trailer for Red 2 with Bruce Willis

26 April 2013 9:23 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

With two blockbusters under his belt already this year, Bruce Willis will be returning to the big screen once more this summer in Red 2. The action/comedy promises to be the third hugely successful sequel starring Willis, following A Good Day to Die Hard and G.I. Joe: Retaliation in recent months.

The original line-up will be returning to the big screen for their second outing, this time with Dean Parisot at the helm in Robert Schwentke’s place.

And after seeing a handful of new character posters surface this week, Yahoo Movies have debuted the first full-length trailer, following on from the first teaser trailer that kicked the year off back in January.
