With more kick ass action than should be rightly legal, Tony Jaa’s Ong-Bak 2 (retitled Ong-Bak:The Beginning for its UK debut) is heading next for release, on R2 DVD and Blu-ray. Does it have a hugely coherent storyline…. Nah…but it makes up for that minor omission in spades, with an all out action fest, pretty much from the get go. Disc extras include; Alternate Trailer, Press Interview Clips, Behind the Scenes footage, TV Special, Trailer (HD), Photo Gallery. Ong-Bak 2 hits the shelves in the UK February 15th. Synopsis: Set in the regal times of King Naresuan, Tien, a man who was born into nobility but had it stripped from him after his parents were brutally murdered. During his childhood Tien learned Khon, a form of dance which is usually reserved for royalty. Although he didn't know it yet, Khon would later prove to be an invaluable aide to him.

Who’S It For? Fans of martial arts movies, and we’re talking old school, 1970’s style blood n’ guts.
Expectations: It has to be dumb with a name like Ninja Assassin, because it’s trying way too hard. It’s like naming a movie Kick Ass Cowboys or Machete B*tch (dibs).

Rain as Raizo: Rain’s real name is Ji Hun Jeong, but you have to have a lead actor that’s as obnoxiously glitzy as Ninja Assassin. So, I guess when I finally get around to making Machete B*tch, I’ll have to cast someone with a stage name like Razor or Sunrise.

A few years back, the dynamic, gritty, exciting martial arts action flick Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior gave us country bumpkin (Tony Jaa) in modern Bangkok, hunting down a relic stolen from his home village and busting it up with mobsters and street punks and all manner of bad guys. So I'm sitting in a screening room at noon of a recent weekday, watching Tony Jaa kick huge quantities of ass in Ong-Bak 2: The Beginning and thinking, This is too much fun to be considered work.
No, Ong-Bak 2 isn't a great movie and, no, Tony Jaa isn't a great actor. But so what? If you love the pure kinetics of a well-shot martial-arts film and feel as though the form hasn't been the same since Jackie Chan and Jet Li went Hollywood, Tony Jaa is the most exciting figure to come along in years.
In his previous two films, Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior and The Protector, Jaa demonstrated an explosive physical style that seemed to be equal parts kung fu, gymnastics and Mighty Mouse. We’ve come to expect the unexpected from Steven Soderbergh, but even Empire was surprised by the recent news he is to direct a spy thriller called Knockout starring mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano. So, we had a chat with him about it.“My feeling was, If I don’t do this, somebody else will,” says the Oscar-winning director. “I felt, somebody is going to look at her and go, ‘She should be in a movie!’ And I felt like, Why shouldn’t I be the person saying that?” Carano is an experienced fighter – trained in Muay Thai, the martial art form used by Tony Jaa in Ong-Bak – and while she has limited screen experience, she certainly lives up to the title Knockout. “If you start following the female mma fighters, Gina pops out pretty noticeably,” says Soderbergh. “I thought it was a fascinating combination of appearance and activity.

Kicking, punching, dodging crocodiles, more punching and back-flipping off elephants. That's right, Tony Jaa is back with another dose of Muay Thai madness in Ong-Bak 2 and you can get a dose of it here over at FilmDrunk.Not a sequel in the strictest sense, Ong-Bak 2 is set in Ancient Thailand and stars Jaa as Tien, the son of a murdered nobleman who embarks on a quest for vengeance with the help of a posse of shit-kicking brigands and the odd helpfully positioned elephant. The path of this martial arts actioner to the screen has been far from smooth, with Jaa having a breakdown midway through the shoot and disappearing into the jungle for two months. The Thai director/star/fighting machine bounced back though (literally, if the trailer's water buffalo stunt is anything to go by) and Ong-Bak 2 looks like it might just match the 2003 original's madcap genius.Ong-Bak 2 is

Not so lucky is the fact that from the looks of the trailer, they will be watching it dubbed into French? An odd decision for a country so at home with watching subtitled movies. Any how. As well as the new cut of the trailer, there’s some other goodies to check out on the French official website. OB2 opens in France July 22nd.

• Fango got the scoop on the DVD dates for several horror films coming from IFC Films in the next several months. All of these titles either have played or can be seen now via video-on-demand, and they’ll be Blockbuster exclusives before being made available for general retail sales.
The animation omnibus Fear(S) Of The Dark and Christopher Denham’s disturbing family study Home Movie are already in Blockbuster stores, and will hit retail in October. A bunch more have Blockbuster berths only, with no retail slots determined yet: Bruce McDonald’s Pontypool, which just joined the on-demand lineup and opened theatrically in New York today (see review here), hits October 13; Antti-Jussi Annila’s Sauna is coming June 23; Daniel Myrick’s The Objective has been moved from its previous Blockbuster date of July 28 to July 14; Duane Graves and Justin Meeks’ The Wild Man Of The Navidad attacks in August

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine.
After listening to the Macho Movie Review [2] of Ong Bak 2, I was prepared to enjoy an awesome action flick when I inserted my DVD of the movie into my player. To be honest, I had purchased the DVD prior to listening to the review, and I had sampled some of the action scenes. Like Wintle and I imagine other movie lovers, I have a backlog of unwatched DVDs that is growing rather than shrinking. So the acclaim given and enthusiasm shown by Wintle, Nagy, and Billy in their review moved Ong Bak 2 to the top of my stack. Yet, their review came out weeks ago, and I have finally written my review. Why the delay? Because I was disappointed. I guess

Fans of bone-crunching action have been turning their gaze to Thailand in recent years, with the rise of Tony Jaa and Prachya Pinkaew, respectively the star and director of Ong-Bak and Tom Yum Goong. My second favourite theatrical experience of last year was a midnight screening of the most recent Pinkaew release Chocolate, starring his latest protégé Jeeja Yanin, which you can catch Reed's review of right here. I've been waiting to hear about a follow-up for this petite Muay Thai cyclone, and it's finally arrived in the announcement for her second movie, Du Suay Doo.
One thing that I appreciate about the rise of the Thai action industry is the patience they've shown in making their movies.

Austin, TX’s South by Southwest Film Festival, running March 13-21, has revealed the titles playing in its new Fantastic Fest at Midnight sidebar. It’s the first time the two Lone Star State events have joined forces to present a selection of genre features, all of which are making their world or U.S. premieres.
The six movies, which will play at Austin’s Alamo South Lamar theater, are: Ong-bak 2, martial-arts star Tony Jaa’s sequel to his breakout actioner; Black, from French director co-writer Pierre Laffargue, an Africa-set synthesis of blaxploitation mayhem and the occult; The Haunting In Connecticut, Peter Cornwell’s fact-based chiller about a family facing evil spirits in their new home (recently moved to a March 27 release date by Lionsgate); The Horseman, writer/director Steve Kastrissos’ bloody Australian revenge saga (no relation to Lionsgate’s upcoming serial-killer flick The Horsemen); Phil Claydon’s self-descriptive British

Heads up U.S. fight fans. Magnolia Pictures has just confirmed they have just picked up the acquired North American rights to Tony Jaa’s - Ong-Bak 2. Even better, they are planning a theatrical release for the film, through their genre arm Magnet Releasing! The Weinstein Company originally held the rights but then oddly (pity the exec that made that decision) gave them up, late last this year. So Mag has stepped in and nabbed them. Yay! No word yet on a release date, but keep it here for updates.

Stateside fans of authentic, cuts-and-bruises kickboxing will be rejoicing, with news that Ong-Bak 2 has picked up a Us distribution deal, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures.The sequel to Ong-Bak, in which Tony Jaa defends a village's Buddhist icon, beating up half of Thailand in the process, was an underground hit in the Us back in 2003. Jaa hasn't made as big an impact in Hollywood as expected since then, but gets another chance to impress with his no-holds-barred Muay Thai stylings Magnolia Pictures, who also released the original, have high hopes for Jaa. Eamonn Bowles, president of the distributor, said: "We're beyond thrilled to be able to carry the franchise forward and continue our relationship with Tony."Magnolia is shortly to release Chocolate, more martial arts mentalism from Ong-Bak director Prachya Pinkaew. Ong-Bak 3 is currently in production and slated for release at the end of the year.
