Bocoe: The control system has been repaired.
Dr. Eggman: Excellent! But why did you take two whole weeks?
Bocoe: Because THEY decided to do an episode by themselves!
Decoe: Right! This pro gramme is important to us...
[Eggman tosses a can at Decoe, and hits him on the head]
Decoe: Ack...
[taking it back]
Decoe: I mean, Eggman-sama is important to us!

Impressive Anime series mangled in US edit
16 March 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Newcomers to Sonic X should know that there are two "Sonic X's": The original Japanese version and the US released edit/re-dub. They are very different.

The Japanese version is really a good anime series. It has surprisingly complex dialogue and character development, and manages to be dark, lighthearted, and hilarious at the same time. Like a lot of anime in its genre, it can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

The US version is simply a shadow of the original. Essential portions of dialogue are turned into cartoon clichés. There is quite a bit of character development in the original, but you simply won't hear it through the dumbed down dubbing.

The actual character of the voice actors is very different as well. The Japanese Sonic sounds cocky, but also very mature with an ironic sense of humor. The US actor just sounds cocky. The Japanese Chris, likewise, comes across as obviously very vulnerable, shy, and terrified of being left alone, in contrast to the US version where he more often seems spoiled and annoying.

Anyone infuriated by Chris should hear how Eggman rakes him over the coals (verbally) in Ep. 49., or what he says about himself during the riveting dialogue with Sonic in Ep. 51. These very "grown up" scenes are just mangled into vague cartoon clichés in the 4kids version.

The 4kids Sonic X is an okay kids' show. The Japanese version is very good anime.
