Quotes

Mibu: We come to life, we die... It's a perpetual renewal. How boring
Jiro Kokubun: Did you come up with that? Or did you read it in a book
Mibu: No, I just came up with it.
Jiro Kokubun: Don't think about the future, you are still young.
Mibu: But I have hope
Jiro Kokubun: Me too, but I dislike triviality.
Mibu: Triviality? Is thinking about the future trivial?
Jiro Kokubun: Yes.
Mibu: So what is your goal in life then?
Jiro Kokubun: Satisfaction of the present. The sword, and nothing else. I only think about victory at the national championship. Everything else is futile. Do you understand?

The philosophical question "What is the meaning of life?" is still unanswered, is it?
28 January 2007 | by (Moscow, Russia) – See all my reviews

Frankly, I'm very surprised to see this movie has not been commented yet. So I guess I'll be the first. It is based on a story by Yukio Mishima, who knew a thing or two about being obsessed. The story revolves around a schoolboy who is a kendo genius (traditional Japanese sword fighting). Despite being very young he is asked to lead his school's kendo team as a captain in an upcoming championship. But for him, kendo is more then just a sport, it's a way of life, so he takes this responsibility very serious... too serious. Won't spoil the rest for you, but can guaranty that by the end of this classic you'll understand why phrases like "it's just a (game, sport, etc.)" make my blood boil...
