Superb Thriller of 70's Golden era :)
wasif478328 January 2019
This is a superb Thriller of 70's Golden era :)very well directed, fast paced with only 3 songs to break the pace. It was ahead of it times and would make for a great remake. The acting by Vinod Khanna,Shriram Lagoo and Amjad Khan is noteworthy. The background score is really good & adds to the tension. The camera work is excellent job with reddish & green vintage camera.the stunts are pretty good.the romantic angle could have been done away with because it adds nothing to the story line and introduces a useless romantic number to slacken the pace of the movie. Vinod Khanna plays his macho image well while Amjad Khan is great in his negative role

A real thriller of 70's A must watch movie even in the year 2019 :)

Inkaar

Warning: Spoilers
Review By Kamal K

The films starts with Haridas Choudhry (Shreeram Lagoo), wealthy owner of a shoe company refusing to bow to the pressure of his business associates to lower the quality of the products. He reasons his honesty and hard work enabled him to achieve his present status from a cobbler thereby allowing him to provide a good life for his family consisting of wife Somu, son Guddu and sister Geeta (Vidya Sinha). To overcome this opposition he decides to buy the shares of his associates and raises funds to do so when he receives a ransom call for his son. Much to his relief, he finds that Bansi, son of his servant, Sitaram (Sadhu Mehar) had been wrongly kidnapped.

Instinctively, Haridas refuses to pay any ransom Nonetheless, on constant pleading by Geeta and Somu, the kind hearted Haridas, who has always treated Sitaram and his son as part of the family, relents, and decides to pay the ransom. The police team appears on the scene headed by CID inspector Amarnath Gill (Vinod Khanna) with whom Geeta was forced to sever here relationship by her brother who felt that he will not be able to take care of her needs and comforts.

It is from this stage that the cat and mouse game begins in the film as Raj Singh (Amjad Khan), had planned the crime carefully with the help of his two associates, Manmohan (Bharat Kapoor) and Preeti (Sheetal) thereby keeping him well ahead of the law enforcing agencies, till the hard work and diligent chase by Gill and his team bears fruit. Following a painstakingly laid out plan, they are able to capture the two and secure the freedom of Bansi, although the booty remains untraceable. A cornered Raj Singh who had hatched the conspiracy to settle an old grudge against Haridas, is able to see through all the traps laid by the CID and goes on a killing spree, before being killed by Gill.

The film is a tad long for the genre and could have been easily shortened. There were some tedious deviations in the otherwise taut screenplay byJyoti Swaroop while the dialogues by Sagar Sarhadi lacked punch, a necessity to add flavour and fire to the proceedings. The flashback romantic scenes between Gill and Geeta could have been curtailed.

Vinod Khanna & Amjad khan have given amazing performance. Vidya Sinha does justice to her role. The music by Rajesh Roshan, set to lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, could be dubbed as lacklustre with the exception of an item number "O Mungda Mungda" filmed on Helen. Sung by Usha Mangeshkar, it remains a chartbusters till date and a favourite of djs. Cinematography by Anwar Siraj is slick, especially the fight sequences (composed by Veeru Devgun) as is the editing by Waman Bhosle and Gurudutt Shirali.

A brilliant investigation drama
jmathur_swayamprabha22 August 2014
Seventies was the decade of crime-thrillers in Bollywood. However most of the crime-based stories made during that period were average and run-of-the-mill type. Only a handful of them were well-made and deserved admiration. Inkaar (1977) is one such crime-thriller in which the crime that takes place is the kidnapping of a child for the dual objective of extracting ransom from his father as well as seeking revenge from him for an old grudge. It's definitely a very impressive drama containing an engrossing cat and mouse game between the criminal and the investigator.

Inkaar (denial) starts with the kidnapping of a child in the household of a rich shoe manufacturer Haridaas Chaudhary (Dr. Shreeraam Laagoo) by Raj Singh (Amjad Khan) and his associates Manmohan (Bharat Kapoor) and Preeti (Sheetal). Raj Singh has done it mainly because he has to settle an old score with Haridaas Chaudhary. Besides, he wants a hefty sum of Rs. 20 Lacs as ransom to release the kidnapped child.

However the kidnappers themselves commit a blunder by kidnapping the son of the servant of the household (Saadhu Meher) instead of the son of Haridaas Chaudhary. Initially reluctant Haridaas Chaudhary gets ready to pay the ransom for release of his servant's son also. The kid gets released but the investigating cop Amar (Vinod Khanna) is not ready to leave the case at this stage. He deeply investigates the case and trails the principal kidnapper, i.e., Raj Singh. There is no love lost between himself and Haridaas Chaudhary also because he is in love with Haridaas' sister Geeta (Vidya Sinha) and Haridaas has refused for their marriage. However Amar does not allow his personal feelings to affect his duty. He not only catches Raj Singh in the end but gets the ransom amount back also.

The specialty of this brilliant thriller is that it focuses less on the crime and more on its investigation. In fact, the bulk of the narrative has gone into the investigation exercise done by the hero Amar and his sidekick Yaadav (M. Raajan) only. The script has been written quite logically and intelligently for the investigation activity and the hero solves the case and catches the criminal like a normal human-being only and not a larger than life hero of a typical Bollywood movie. This drama despite some blocking due to the romantic track shown in flash back, keeps the viewer engaged for around two hours. The writer Jyoti Swaroop and the debutante director Raj N. Sippy have kept the things as realistic as possible and it's this approach only which has made this movie extra-ordinary and a cut above the regular Bollywood flicks.

Besides, the crime and its investigation, the movie examines the paradoxical human nature also with realism and sarcasm. The rich businessman himself has arrived at his present position from a very modest background but he refuses to marry his sister to a cop because of status difference. He promptly gets ready to pay the hefty ransom amount for the release of his own son but hesitates in doing so when it is known that the kidnapped child is actually the son of his servant. Despite these human weaknesses, he has a kind heart and takes the side of truth and honesty in business and life. These are the beautiful tassels attached to the main drama which certainly add value to it. All the characters including the villain appear to be real and from this world only which itself is a big achievement of the filmmaker.

Technically the movie is up to the mark. The scene of chasing of the villain by the police dogs in the climax is very thrilling and sensational. The movie is not unduly long and the narrative moves fast with the sole blockage coming in the form of the romantic track of the hero and the heroine.

Director Raj N. Sippy has extracted admirable performances from his talented cast chosen quite prudently. From this debut movie of himself, he seems to have developed a good rapport with Vinod Khanna and he made some good movies with him later also. For the first time, Amjad Khan was able to come out of the hangover of Gabbar Singh (of Sholay) in this movie and present a different kind of villain.

Rajesh Roshan's musical score with the lyrics of Majrooh Sultaanpuri is decent. Mungda Mungda Main Gud Ki Dali sung by Usha Mangeshkar is exceedingly popular even today.

As said earlier, only a small percentage of crime-thrillers made in Bollywood deserve to be termed as quality products. Hence Inkaar which had unfortunately flopped on the box office, is entitled for appreciation. Those who like crime and investigation based thrillers should not miss it.

The 1970s Thriller!
lehmanjfr7 May 2017
Brilliant Indian movie, different and intelligent. Well thought out, a remake of High & Low but equally grasping and engaging. Vinod Khanna is awesome in the movie as always, one of the finest actors in the history of World cinema. The camera angles, cinematography and some of the sequences are very well thought out and executed. The only flaw is occasional slow down because of unwanted songs.

One of the Best Thrillers
ma-deshpande26 September 2011
It was way back 1977 and i saw this movie about 5 times in a week. It is one of the best Thrillers.

Vinod Khanna and Amjad Khan are at their BEST. Director Raj N Sippy keeps you at edge of the seat through out the movie. It has Passion Love Dedication and the Plot for becoming a Super Hit movie. Vinod Khanna is great, if he would not have taken Sanyas with Osho, it would be he who will be on KBC Today. And to top it all Mungada by Helen.

The Driver's Son is rescued by the Business man with the money he gets as a Loan, conflict between Business ethics and humanity.

This is a Must Watch Movie if you are Movie Buff.

Could have been good, but it is worse
Insane_Man31 January 2019
The start is promising, good and solid. Everything is good until the climax. Start as a solid one and falls apart towards the very end. As if, the director was in a hurry to complete the movie that's why the entire movie is good but the last 15-20 minutes It can be called a good thriller. Vinod Khanna and Amzad khan did their best. Both are no more. Tribute.

Amjad Khan vs Vinod Khanna all the way
Chinmay198720 September 2019
This thriller was ahead of its time. The movie belongs to Amjad Khan & Vinod Khanna. The great Amjad Khan nails it. Vinod Khanna excels in his role. The supporting cast Bharat Kapoor, Shreeram Lagoo, Sadhu Meher also play their parts well. Vidya Sinha has a small part opposite Vinod. Raj Sippy's direction is exceptional considering he shot this in 1975/76 . Who can forget Helen's Mungla song. Watch it guys.

Gripping thriller
personalkm27 November 2020
This movie is nicely directed. My only complaint is that I wish it was more longer as it was quite enjoyable.

Vinod Khanna is handsome and him and his team are all believable as CID police officers and the work they carry out. Amjad Khan in my opinion steals the show.

High and Low
vishal_wall13 July 2006
This movie is actually very good. Vinod Khanna and Shri Ram Lagoo are very good. Amjad Khan is Amjad Khan. There is a weird Vidya Sinha track which doesn't go with the film but it doesn't go too far anyways. Its a remake of epic drama by Kurusowa else I would have given it a 9. M Rajan is very good as 'Yadav'. Film has fantastic background score. Even though its a remake its a good remake. This is Raj Sippy's first film. After this one he made 'Josh' which is another Amjad Khan film. If you are an Amjad Khan fan then this is a film to watch. Last few scenes of dog chase are extremely interesting. The look of the film is very trendy and confident. watch it!!

Remake not even close to original
RothmanMax14 October 2017
A remake of the Kurosawa film - High and Low (1963). Technically the movie is above par in terms of contemporary Bollywood junk during that period but nevertheless if you want drama and the brilliance of Kurosawa, see the original.

The only redeeming feature of the film was of course Helen and the song Mungla Mungla.

Mungda Mungda - Song
rajalond2 July 2008
This film contains the surprise hit song Mungda Mungda which is picturised on Helen and sung by Usha Mangeshkar (her biggest hit to date) The song is such a crowd pleaser that it is still one of the most popular songs to date. It is still heard everywhere from Radio, TV, parties and is still being re-mixed constantly. What looks like a front bench crowd pleaser song, instantly became a hit with the masses. I don't think there is anyone in India that doesn't recognise this song. When played, people can be seen to wolf whistle and get up and dance to it.

Well worth watching just for this iconic number. The film, on the whole, is also quite good. Well worth a watch.
