The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Lr's The Blu Room: Legend Of The Guardians 3D & 2D Blu-Ray Review

Legend Of The Guardians:the Owls Of Ga' Hoole – (3D Blu-ray)Warner Home Entertainment2010/Rated PG/Running Time 97 minsList Price $44.98 – Now AvailableWhat would possess Zack Snyder to make a kiddie film about owls? I remember asking myself this question many months back when I first caught the trailer for the 300 director's latest, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. Had Snyder licked one too many Tootsie Roll pops or was he trying to show Warner Bros., the studio which had produced his last two films, that he could be a versatile director? Perhaps making a sure fire hit children's film was the only way the studio would back a radical idea like his bizarre looking epic Sucker Punch? Whatever the reason, I don't really care, because Lotg not only marks Snyder's best film, but proves he can handle stories of substance over style. Not that any of Snyder's familiar style is missing from Lotg, »

Damsels in Distress

Opens: 2011

Cast: Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf

Director: Whit Stillman

Summary: The story revolves around a group of style-obsessed college girls who take in a new student (Gerwig) and teach her their misguided ways of helping people at their grungy university.

Analysis: The first film in a decade from arthouse darling Whit Stillman, a filmmaker's filmmaker whose three Manhattan-based, yuppie-themed mannerist comedies - "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco" - were a big influence on the likes of auteurs such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. Stillman says this film varies somewhat from his previous trilogy of sorts, telling First Things that "This film is different, Completely different. Okay, not completely different, but it’s different".

Catch .44

Opens: 2011

Cast: Forest Whitaker, Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman, Nikki Reed, Deborah Ann Woll

Director: Aaron Harvey

Summary: The story focuses on three women being thrust into an extraordinary situation involving a psychopathic hitman, a grizzled trucker and a delusional line cook.

Analysis: Oddly little is known about this indie crime comedy aside from the three lead female roles have gone through more than a couple of rounds of casting musical chairs. The likes of Maggie Grace, Kate Mara, Laura Ramsey, Sarah Roemer, Lizzy Caplan and Lauren German were all attached at one point or another before the final trio of Malin Akerman ("Watchmen"), Nikki Reed ("Twilight") and Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") were settled on.

Bruce Willis, Forest Whitaker, Michael Rosenbaum and Brad Dourif also star with Willis as a crime boss behind everything that happens and Whitaker as a dangerously unstable assassin. Aaron Harvey, who last directed »

Matt Damon 'Really, Really, Really' Wants To Star In Neill Blomkamp's 'Elysium,' Was Almost In 'Avatar'

20 December 2010 1:36 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Despite a distinct lack of awards-season love thus far, we're sticking to our guns and proclaiming Matt Damon's turn as ornery Texas Ranger Laboeuf (pronounced Labeef, but bearing no relation to Shia) in the Coen Bros.' badass Western "True Grit" (in theaters December 22) one of the year's finest and most entertaining performances.

With a role like that in his holster, it's no wonder that the erstwhile Jason Bourne is in as much demand as ever these days. He's already wrapped the thriller "The Adjustment Bureau" and the animated sequel "Happy Feet 2," and has a gaggle of projects -- including Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion" and Cameron Crowe's "We Bought a Zoon" -- already in the hopper. But the most recent film Damon has been linked to is perhaps the most exciting: "Elysium," a top-secret sci-fi flick that reunites "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp with star Sharlto Copley. The Beaver

Opens: March 23rd 2011

Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

Director: Jodie Foster

Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.

Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.

The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos, »

Real Steel Edit Bay Visit; Steve Watches 10 Minutes of Footage and Interviews Director Shawn Levy

9 December 2010 9:46 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When I first heard that director Shawn Levy was making a robot boxing movie, I’ll admit to thinking it sounded like a really stupid idea.  After all, the guy who made Pink Panther and the Night at the Museum movies taking on robot boxing?  Um…no thanks. But after sitting in the editing room the other day with Levy and having him show me (along with a few other reporters) about ten minutes of the movie, consider me ready to enter the ring to fight alongside Hugh Jackman.

While I’ll explain what the movie is about and have a lot more details about what I learned after the jump, I want to immediately talk about something that absolutely floored me during the presentation.

Like all of you, when I watch a movie, I can tell when an effect is done by computers and when it’s real.  Meaning, »

Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel May Join New Year's Eve

9 December 2010 4:57 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent About.com Hollywood Movies news »

Jessica Biel was one of the hundreds of celebs...all right, that's an exaggeration...dozens of celebs who played a part in Garry Marshall's Valentine's Day, and The Hollywood Reporter says she may be coming back for more holiday hi-jinx. Biel and Modern Family (one of the funniest shows on TV) star Sofia Vergara were both offered roles in Marshall's Valentine's Day sequel, New Year's Eve. If they say yes, they'll have to prepare quickly as the film's scheduled to begin shooting in New York this month.

New Year's Eve has already attracted some big names including Robert De Niro, Hilary Swank and Michelle Pfeiffer. The three haven't committed yet, but are in talks to join Marshall's gang. Ashton Kutcher will likely be returning to the fold, and Glee's Lea Michele and Abigail Breslin have already said yes.

Valentine's Day hit theaters on February 12th and brought in $215 million worldwide before exiting theaters. »

Stellar Chairman Qin: China Will Produce an 'Avatar'

8 December 2010 8:02 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Beijing – Sitting in his sparsely-decorated corner office in a glass-and-steel high rise in the Beijing’s central business district, Stellar Group chairman Qin Hong proclaims, “There will be another Avatar in China and it’ll be another Hollywood film, but in two to three years' time, a Chinese film will do as much business in China as Avatar.”

By grossing $207 million in China alone this year (second only to its U.S. take), Avatar became China’s biggest box office hit of all time.

However, as the majority investor in upcoming films from three of China’s top directors -- Chen Kaige’s Sacrifice, just out this week; Peter Chan’s Wu Xia, now shooting with Donnie Yen and Takeshi Kaneshiro; and Kekexili director Lu Chuan’s first ancient war epic, King’s Feast, due out next fall – Stellar and Qin could eventually back the Avatar-killer

Hollywood spreading International Wings

22 November 2010 11:11 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Universal Pictures International has said yes to a two-year first-look deal with Australian Production House  Hopscotch Features.

Universal’s London-based strategic arm and the Australian production banner apparently aim to develop and produce Australian projects with an international appeal. This pact marks the first English-language distribution and co-production deal that Universal Pictures International has secured in its bid to extend its tentacles and build presence in various markets across the globe. Hollywood has apparently decided to grow some wings.

Upi and Hopscotch aim to develop and produce one to two Australian flavored films per year that have distinct international appeal using key and international talent.

In exchange, Hopscotch will look to take advantage of Upi’s international distribution muscle with all titles being jointly rolled out theatrically by Upi and Hopscotch in Australia.

Script development and story ideas are being overseen by Happy Feet writer John Collee.

Oscar Update: Is 'Toy Story 3' Really a Lock for Best Animated Feature? What about the 'Dragon'?

19 November 2010 12:33 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Walt Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross created a bit of a stir earlier this week when he told Deadline the plan wasn't just to win a Best Animated Feature Oscar, but instead, "We're going for the Best Picture win," he told Deadline's Pete Hammond. "We wanted to have the best movie and the reviews have clearly said that and it's the number one box office hit of the year so I'm not sure why we would not go for it all."

The plan is to campaign for a Best Picture win for Toy Story 3 by creating advertisements that associate past Best Picture winners with the animated film, such as the image of Mr. Pricklepants to the right in a pose to compare to surprise 1999 Best Picture winner Shakespeare in Love.

Other references will include West Side Story, On The Waterfront, Silence Of The Lambs, Titanic, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King »
