Doctor Who: the nerdy in-jokes from series 2

  • Den of Geek
From ampersands to The Apprentice, from dinner ladies to Dirty Den, here's a selection of nerdy in-jokes from Doctor Who series 2...

Last month we took a look at Doctor Who Series One as it celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Specifically, we delved deep into the murky world of in-jokes and sweet nerdy references.

Let’s take another trip back in time and have a look at the more notable and interesting references and in-jokes from Doctor Who Series Two, starring David Tennant and Billie Piper, where the credit of “Doctor Who” had been changed back to “The Doctor”. Pfft, party poopers.

New Earth

Old-skool fans would have been forgiven for being excited at the prospect, given that “New Earth” was a planet mentioned in the 1974 classic Invasion Of The Dinosaurs (though it didn’t actually exist in that story, it was a fake world). But all fans could get excited at

Doctor Who: the film careers of Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi

  • Den of Geek
Alex's series looking back at the film careers of actors who've played the Doctor finishes with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi...

Feature

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.

By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials

Anna Wing obituary

Actor who became a household name in her 70s as Lou Beale in EastEnders

When Anna Wing took on her most famous role, in EastEnders in 1985, the Sun ran the headline: "Enter the dragon ... Lou Beale!" As hard as nails and as brittle as pressed flowers, Lou was one of a declining breed, an East End widow whose power indoors was absolute, but whose attitude towards the outside world was one of mounting fear and alienation. She played Albert Square's indomitable matriarch for only four years but Wing, who has died aged 98, became synonymous for many with her character.

The original character outline by Julia Smith and Tony Holland, creators of EastEnders, described Lou Beale thus: "The changing face of the area (especially the immigrants) is a constant source of fear to her, but then she doesn't go out much. She prefers to be at home, or on a trip down memory lane.

Psych Draws Vinnie Jones, Olivia d’Abo & Kali Hawk

  • Boomtron
Psych is stacking the deck, drawing actors Vinnie Jones, Olivia d’Abo and Kali Hawk, and adding those wild cards to their already impressive hand. With these additions, season 8 should be aces.

Vinnie Jones recently played the bad guy, Sebastian Moran on CBS’s Elementary. I know the former professional footballer best as Bullet Tooth Tony from the cult classic Guy Ritchie crime film, Snatch. He also played the Juggernaut for X-Men: The Last Stand.

It comes as no surprise that on Psych, Jones will play a “brutal British criminal”. I mean, those three words may as well be the actor’s middle name.

Olivia d’Abo was a Wonder Years star once upon a time as Kevin Arnold’s older sister. TV Line reported on her impressive new role as a “master infiltrator” and number two in Vinnie Jones’ criminal organization. How fiendish! Speaking of villainy, d’Abo also

Vinnie Jones’ Son Gets Taken In “Killer’s List”

  • LRM Online
Deadline reports that actor Vinnie Jones (Snatch, X-Men: The Last Stand) is attached to play a retired hitman and widower whose young son is kidnapped in Killer’s List. The film is being produced by Phil Avalon and is expected to be directed by him as well.

Deadline has additional details on the script, written by Brian Vining.

“The plot follows the guy (Jones) as the kidnapper sends him a cardboard box containing his son’s fingers, a mobile phone and instructions to eliminate five of his former criminal associates.”

That’s a gruesome storyline.

Jones, a former footballer (played on Chelsea, among other teams), will be typecast once again as a tough guy. His most notable role is probably “Bullet Tooth Tony” from Snatch, which has a scene in it where a man tries to lay his hands on Tony’s young son…

Jones also played “Juggernaut” in X-Men: The Last Stand

Vinnie Jones And Stephen Lang Join Aussie War Drama 34th Battalion

Pro soccer player turned sneering action star Vinnie Jones has played a number of memorable tough guys, from Snatch's Bullet-Tooth Tony to X-Men: The Last Stand's unstoppable Juggernaut. But with his latest project, Jones will offer no smirking badass bon mots. Instead, he will play it straight and solemn in the ensemble war drama The 34th Battalion. The Australian production penned by father-son team Ian and Luke Sparke will focus on four friends from rural New South Wales who enlist in the army following the catastrophic Gallipoli campaign of World War I. Deadline reports Jones will play the British Lieutenant-Colonel who led the titular band of soldiers, and American actor Stephen Lang (Avatar) will play a U.S. officer. The pair join a cast that includes Luke Hemsworth (brother of Chris and Liam Hemsworth), Emilie de Ravin (Brick), Charles Mesure (Desperate Housewives), Les Hill and Andrew Lees

Secret Identity: Five Actors Who Could Play Lobo

"Sherlock Holmes" director Guy Ritchie is putting down the pipe and picking up the cigar for "Lobo," the upcoming adaptation of the popular DC Comics antihero produced by Warner Bros. Hot on the heels of directing "Iron Man" actor Robert Downey Jr., Ritchie seems to have developed the urge to dive into the comic book movie bin himself—but first, he'll need a leading man.

Casting Lobo is tricky, especially given the WB's description of the character as "a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled antihero." Even if enhanced effects are necessary in creating Lobo's onscreen persona, the character needs a tested actor underneath the make-up... and these five men could very well do the trick.

1. Vinnie Jones: Having already worked with Ritchie on "Snatch" and "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," actor Vinnie Jones already has a level of familiarity with the "Lobo" director that could pay off on screen.

[DVD Review] Legend of the Bog

There is a special area occupied by movies neither truly bad nor anywhere near good, a film Purgatory if you will. These films are not misunderstood nor well made but just strangely appealing and leave you stumped when someone asks the simple question “How was it?” Legend of the Bog is one of these films, a film that might be fun in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way if it didn’t take itself so seriously while undercutting its own intentions with some genuinely mind-boggling music, listless acting and a barebones plot built around a relatively novel horror idea.

As you can see from the cover of the DVD release, Vinnie Jones, he of Bullet-Tooth Tony fame (Snatch, for the uninitiated), is front and center. Except he isn’t – this is an ensemble horror piece through and through, with Jones playing the moronically named Mr. Hunter, a (wait for it

Bullet Tooth Tony walks, Jones acquitted in bar fight charges

Fans of "Snatch" actor and former British soccer player Vinnie Jones can rejoice, their favorite brawny Englishman was acquitted of assault Thursday for his role in a bar fight in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Jones, 44, was charged with misdemeanor assault for a fight that erupted at Wiley's Tavern. Reported previously on Monsters and Critics, Jones was brought up on charges for punching Juan Trevino-Barrera, 24, after Barrera's friends smashed Jones face in with a beer glass and beer bottle. Barrera, an ex felon, testified that the attack was unprovoked, but Jones' defense argued it was self defense. The Associated Press reports from Sioux City that the actor stated he was in South Dakota as part of

Would You Fight This Man?

Vinnie Jones is in the UK press after being smashed in the face with a glass in a pub brawl brought on when someone asked him about his role in X Men 3. Note to self: never ask Vinnie Jones about X Men 3. Following is an email the web-monkey sent me about this just because I find it amusing ...

Here are a few things I enjoy about this:

1. Someone got into a fight with a guy who plays characters with names like Bullet Tooth Tony.

2. It started when someone “asked” him about XMen3 (wasn’t pleasant I’m sure)

3. Vinnie doesn’t like this, retorts, so they glass him in the face with a pint glass.

4. Undaunted, only Then did Vinnie start punching the guy.

5. The author closes the article making no mention of X-Men 3.

Stop fighting with Bullet-Tooth Tony.

Duh.

Vinnie Jones? Post apocalyptic? Zombies? It's Devil's Playground

Andrew Gunn will be directing Devil's Playground based on a script by Bart Ruspoli (an actor in Band of Brothers and Rome) and the film will be produced by Jonathan Sothcott who clearly has the most experience out of the three. Even as such, some big names are attached: Did I say Vinnie Jones? This'll be the second post apocalyptic film he's in by my count, the first being Tooth & Nail. Here's what producer Sothcott had to say about the film:

”Starring Vinnie (Midnight Meat Train) Jones, Danny (Severance) Dyer, Tamer (The Ferryman) Hassan, Martin (Embrace Of The Vampire) Kemp, Jemima Rooper, Billy Murray and Lisa (Pumpkinhead: Ashes To Ashes) McAllister, Devil’S Playground details the plight of the last remnants of a civilization destroyed by an all-out zombie armageddon, following the misguided experiments of a presumed-dead Nobel Prize-winning virologist. In a bid for survival, a group of survivors seek
