Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006)

In Venice Beach, naive Midwesterner JB bonds with local slacker KG and they form the rock band Tenacious D. Setting out to become the world's greatest band is no easy feat, so they set out to steal what could be the answer to their prayers -- a magical guitar pick housed in a rock-and-roll museum some 300 miles away.

Trivia

One of the card's images in the opening sequence is "The Hermit" from the Rider-Waite Tarot deck, which was also used as the inner gatefold image of Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album. See more »

Goofs

When young JB leaves home and a map is shown with an animated line following his travels, the town "Charlotte" appears on the map twice, in both North Carolina and South Carolina. There is no Charlotte, South Carolina, the place marked on the map as "Charlotte" in SC is about where Greenville, SC should be. All other towns marked on the map of the country are correct. If you are a fan of Tenacious D or a stoner, you will absolutely love "The Pick of Destiny"

If you are a fan of Tenacious D or a stoner, you will absolutely love "The Pick of Destiny". If you are not, you'll probably be either confused, annoyed, or bored. Ticket sales for the film won't be much, but concession stand sales will be at an all time high (no pun intended). I'll admit, I absolutely loved the movie. Its a surreal, pointless, and hilarious motion picture detailing the (fictional) origins of the band Tenacious D. The best way to determine if this film is for you is to watch an episode of the HBO series. If you enjoy what you see to the degree that you'd sit through the show for ninety minutes, than check this film out. Its refreshing to see a mainstream film with no intentions of appealing to a wide audience.

Its difficult to make an assessment of such a non-linear film, so I'll just mention a few of my favorite scenes. The opening explaining the pain JB had at home is the funniest part of the whole film. The rest doesn't live up to that awesome opening sequence, but its does fine. The mushroom trip with Sasquatch is disorienting and surreal. The training of JB to become a great rock musician by KG is great also. Finally, look for some funny cameos by Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller, and Meat Loaf. In the end, Tenacious D are probably best enjoyed in half hour episodes, but fans of the show will find much to enjoy here. Definitely not for everyone, but one of the funniest films of the year. (6/10)
