This week's Cannes festival has been mired in controversy because of the lack of female film-makers. Producer Trudie Styler and director Lucy Walker spill the beans
The male-only Palme d'Or shortlist sparked outrage at the Cannes film festival this week. A group of prominent French film-makers were so angry they wrote an open letter of condemnation. Lucy Walker, director of the Oscar-nominated film Waste Land, and Trudie Styler, who has co-founded Maven, a film production company to support female talent in the industry, talk to Amelia Hill about why, for the 63rd time in the festival's 65-year history, all 22 directors on the shortlist are male.
Lucy Walker: There is a remarkable problem. In Hollywood last year, just 5% of the 250 biggest films were directed by women. That's down from 9% a few years ago. What's going on? It's not that women don't want to do it: in film school, 50% of students are women. »

Film Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
The tale of the superior sequel is seldom told, especially when it comes to action films, and when it comes to something as visually striking and gimmick-heavy as Guy Ritchie’s first Sherlock Holmes film, the conditions for failure are extrapolated even further. But to his credit, the director who has made a career out of sticking to what he knows with Lock, Stock, Snatch, Revolver and RockNRolla has made in A Game of Shadows a strong sequel that enriches the franchise.
The sequel offers new opportunities to a film-maker – character development takes a backseat for relationship development, which spells good news for the on-screen chemistry between Jude Law’s Watson and Robert Downey Junior’s Holmes and it is obvious the actors are having fun in their roles. It helps that the script has been tailored to bring more fun and humour to proceedings, »

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are back as Holmes and Dr Watson in Sherlock Holmes: A Games Of Shadows, a follow-on from the 2009 hit… erm, Sherlock Holmes. In that movie the famous English crime-fighting sleuths from Baker Street battled the evil Dr Blackwood (the brilliant Mark Strong). This time, Holmes and Watson take on perhaps the only person to match Holmes’ intellect: the infamous Professor James Moriarty, played by Jared Harris (most famous for his role in Mad Men, and son of the legendary Richard Harris). The action switches from London to Europe, namely Switzerland, via France and Germany. Watson is about to marry and Holmes is investigating a »

Shame; Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows; The Sitter
In their first feature film collaboration, Hunger, director Steve McQueen and actor Michael Fassbender explored the discovery of the soul via the obliteration of the body through the tale of Irish republican Bobby Sands, who starved himself to death in the Maze prison in pursuit of an elusive political "truth". The duo return to this theme in Shame (2011, Momentum, 18), a nakedly non-erotic thriller in which Fassbender plays Brandon, a New York bachelor obsessed with self-destructive physical gratification. Starting life as an investigation of sex-addiction, the film once again finds McQueen and cinematographer Sean Bobbitt focusing in on the harsh corporeality of the human form which is sharply contrasted with the fluid possibilities of the transcendent personality.
"We're not bad people," Brandon's increasingly alienated yuppie is told by his equally fractured sister Sissy, played with alarmingly raw intensity by Carey Mulligan. "We »

Red Tails scribe John Ridley will be making his directorial debut, featuring André '3000' Benjamin from hip hop duo OutKast, as legendary guitar maestro Jimi Hendrix. Benjamin has been a big presence in developing the feature, according to Iftn [via Geek Tyrant], centering on the musician's time in England in the late 1960s, working on his now famous debut album Are You Experienced. It took Hendrix five months to record the album, which finally debuted in 1967. Production on All Is by My Side is expected to get underway in Ireland for six months in late May. This won't be Benjamin's first film as he's made appearances in Be Cool, Four Brothers, Revolver, Idlewild, Battle in Seattle, and Semi-Pro. He seems perfectly suited for the part...

First of several mooted Hendrix movies gets the green light
Jimi Hendrix is to be played by OutKast's André 3000 in a new biopic. Despite a prior dispute with the guitarist's estate, the movie will reportedly begin shooting in Ireland later this month.
To the surprise of many industry observers, All Is By My Side is currently in pre-production, the Irish Film and Television Network reports. André 3000 will spend six weeks at locations in Bray, Dun Laoghaire and Dublin, including the historic John Player Cigarette Factory. The film is to be directed by Three Kings writer John Ridley, who also wrote the screenplay, and deals with Hendrix's breakthrough in 1966, when he was discovered in a New York club by Linda Keith, then girlfriend of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
Several studios have tried to make Hendrix-related films over the last few years, including a failed project by Paul Greengrass. »

Outkast's Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000, is developing and set to star in a biopic about legendary guitar player Jimi Hendrix. The film is titled All Is By My Side and is slated to start filming in Ireland later this month. Iftn reports (via FirstShowing) that the story will focus on Hendrix's time in England between 1966 and 1967 when he worked on his debut album, Are You Experienced.
John Ridley is making his feature directing debut. Producing is Tristan Orpen Lynch at Subotica Entertainment, Richard Kelly’s Darko Entertainment, and Britain's Matador Pictures. Ridley penned scripts for Three Kings, Undercover Brother, Barbershop, and Red Tails.
Benjamin has not been on the big screen since 2008, after starring in Be Cool, Four Brothers, Revolver, Idlewild, Battle in Seattle, and Semi-Pro. As a musician, he knows first-hand what it is like to be on stage. That, coupled with his uncanny resemblance to Hendrix, makes him a great casting choice. »

The ad, directed by Steve Rogers, is the first under the creative watch of Micah Walker, who joined The Monkeys in February.
Walker said: “The client and agency already had a great campaign thought with ‘There will be Stories’ before I came along. We just had to reintroduce that idea to the public in film. It’s not often you get to make something as fun as this, for something as fun as The Star.”
Iris Kleimann, general manager of marketing at The Star added: “The Star is an entertainment destination, so we believe that our communications must be engaging and entertaining also. This spot achieves this beautifully, as we hoped it would.”

To celebrate the presence of Safe in UK cinemas, here’s an updated list of action hero Jason Statham’s very best films to date…
2011 was without doubt Jason Statham’s best year so far. He managed a grand total of four cinematic releases, though at one point that total was nearer six, until 13 seemed to vanish without a trace and Safe was sensibly pushed back to 2012, thus avoiding an overload of machismo greater than the average human could cope with.
As a result of his insane productivity, our long-standing list of his greatest movies so far needed an update, an event that will hopefully need to be done annually, as he continues to be one of the most productive actors working today.
Statham’s still sensibly chosen to concentrate on making action movies and thrillers all squarely aimed at an adult audience, providing a constant and much-needed fix for someone as bloodthirsty as me, »

Into the Abyss; The Lady; Patience (After Sebald); The Story of Film: An Odyssey
At a key moment in Into the Abyss (2011, Revolver, 12), a quietly metaphysical inquiry into the awful realities of senseless murder and state-sanctioned execution, an off-camera Werner Herzog asks an apparently self-possessed prison chaplain to "tell me about an encounter with a squirrel".
The question, delivered with Herzog's trademark deadpan Bavarian drawl, seems to come from nowhere and to bear little relation to the ongoing discussion about the last hours of condemned inmates facing death by lethal injection. Yet as always with Herzog, there is an insightful intuition at work behind the apparent absurdity of his approach and a moment later the formerly guarded reverend (whose duties on death row await him even as he speaks) is in tears, talking of the sanctity and preciousness of life, however great or small, and apparently confronting the "ecstatic truth »

Disney’s John Carter comes out in UK cinemas today. Much has been made of the large budget and its box office prospects, but for now, let’s concentrate on the film itself, which is keenly anticipated as an adaptation, as director Andrew Stanton’s first live action film, and as a blockbuster.
Though I probably won’t be seeing it this weekend (I’m going to another screening, which I’ll be reviewing nearer the release date), Shadowlocked’s review of John Carter should hopefully be up soon. Until then, here are 7 reasons why it looks like an epic epic of epicness (to reference the posters for Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World):
It’s directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton
On top of that, Stanton has an eye for stunning visuals, whether it’s the sheer eye-popping colour of Finding Nemo’s underwater world, or the ironically elegant dystopia of Wall-e. »

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Season of the Witch," "Drive Angry," "Seeking Justice," "Trespass," "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance." Is that it? Is Nicolas Cage finally done paying that tax bill? Can he go back to making interesting movies in-between the action pay-days again? Sadly, we doubt it, but here's a project that should make Cage a chunk of change without having to lift a finger.
Writing duo Rob Garant and Thomas Lennon ("Reno 911!," "Night at the Museum") have had their script for "Action No. 1" picked up by Lionsgate. It tells the story of a group of nerds who try to steal the famed comic book -- which features the first appearance of Superman -- from Nicolas Cage. The actor's comic was really stolen back in 2000 and was only discovered as recently as last year in an abandoned storage locker. In November Cage sold the comic at auction for $2.1 million, ensuring he »

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, 2011.
Directed by Guy Ritchie.
Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Rachel McAdams, Stephen Fry, Eddie Marsan and Kelly Reilly.
Synopsis:
Sherlock Holmes finds a worthy adversary in Professor Moriarty, who is hell-bent on murdering Dr. Watson and his new wife, and instigating a war between France and Germany.
The film’s music is really rather good. Consistent from the first film, you recognise the clanging theme from its first few notes. It reminds you of all the fun you had watching the original.
Which makes for a nice transition into this sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The absence of a number from that – i.e. Sherlock Holmes 2 – implies the studios want this to be a franchise for quite some time.
The players are the same, with some disposed of rather quickly and a couple new ones brought in to replace them. »
